What a pleasant surprise.
I had been dreading this book and it was the must first read in my stack. I just did not see how I could enjoy this book after Gates/Igle because it was one of my favorite monthly books and always had a blast reading it and never wanted it to end. Supergirl was my Powergirl and Gates/Igle were my Palmiotti/Gray/Conner.
Who knew DC could have lightning strike twice? Powergirl and Supergirl were very much in their own bubble world and that was alright. (Well, except for an occasional Super-World crossover for Supergirl) Like Winick in Powergirl, Spencer/Peaty have set up a great story that reacts with the rest of the DC Universe, as before they were somewhat isolated. What I like especially about Spencer/Peaty is that they are continuing to grow Kara in the world already created. We saw the re-introduction of villains who were in the Gates run, but added what could be Kara's Lex Luthor into the mix. Gates gave us Bizzaro Super Girl and Spencer/Peaty went one step above and gave her own Lex Luthor. (PS I do not think it is any coincidence that his name is Alex (minus the A, and you get... LEX.)
It is a great starting point for new readers and should be enough to keep the skeptics on this book. Honestly, I loved the story, every moment of it.
The art... was fine. In fact, it was also very good. There was one panel that made Supergirl look older which kinda bugged me for some reason, but other than that. I did enjoy it and looking forward to seeing more of it. The cover though... bad. Sorry. The haircut? Makes her look, I dunno too young, or just not a style I would care to have Supergirl drawn in. Everyone is a critic right? Also, I know DC is doing the big Icon Covers, but this one was lackluster. A Pink S? Kinda up there with the Starman/Congorilla, and not really a logo, but sorta. Hopefully it does not turn off too many people like it did with me when I first saw the solicits. The love for the character though got me to buy the book regardless.
There is still a little doubt because there is no way to know how much is Spencer and how much was Peaty (who takes over fully next month with issue #61.) Also, although several years ago and no Gates mythos, issue #33 (also written by Peaty) was a bit lackluster but it was also a fill in issue before Gates took over and jumped into the New Krypton age.
All and all. Supergirl lives on, at least in my stack. Thanks DC!
