Since its inception, the current volume of Supergirl has been generally directionless. That’s not to say that there haven’t been any worthwhile stories told in the almost four years since Loeb’s exceedingly mediocre 5 issue “introductory” arc (the less said of that, the better). In fact, before Sterling Gates jumped on the book seven issues ago, Kelly Puckett was in the middle of a unique and intelligent run that was marred down only by terribly inconsistent art and next to no publicity. As sad as I was that Puckett was prematurely removed, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Gates’ work with the stellar artist, Jamal Igle.

The fact that Gates has been heavily involved in the ongoing New Krypton saga, which is running through all of the titles in the Superman family, has certainly helped alleviate the directionless quality that formerly plagued the title. And regardless of direction, Gates has been doing a bang-up job of mixing action and words; much better than I’ve come to expect from people just breaking into the industry.

The mystery of Superwoman’s identity is revealed this issue, and it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who’s been reading the book. Gates, unlike a Loeb, for example, doesn’t pull SURPRISE REVEALS and UNEXPECTED GUEST STARS GALORE out of his ass. The story is both internally consistent, and also introduces an interesting dynamic that will affect plenty of relationships in the rest of the Superman titles as the revelation disseminates into them.

What most stands out about this issue, and has throughout the majority of the issues since he took over art chores, is the art of Jamal Igle. It is excellent. Whether it’s big action or smaller plain-clothes moments, Igle’s pencils are pretty beautiful. He even makes Reactron’s rather silly costume look not-terrible.

Good stuff.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
