The next time you boast that you could write something as good as what you’re reading, check yourself. This book proves clearly that not everyone can write a good comic (or at least a good superhero comic). I don’t know the author Gillen – I simply bought the book out of affection for the character Beta Ray Bill.

Mr. Gillen, I suspect that you will improve. Here, you are guilty of the following: heavy-handed writing, a seeming inability to condense your narrative, and a surprising skill at making the lovable Beta Ray Bill character uninteresting. By the end of the book, I simply didn’t care what happened to any of the characters. I suppose I was anticipating something that would bridge the end of Thor: SI and the future of Bill (since it was unclear whether Bill had even survived). We didn’t get this, but instead got a below average morality tale.

I have little to say about the art, except that the Djurdevic cover was particularly good.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 3 - Good

Comments

  1. Ron would disagree with you on Gillen….since he writes Phonogram.

But I didnt pick it up so I cant agree/disagree. Good review though man.

  2. @TNC – Thanks for the context. I actually didn’t know who Gillen was. Maybe he’s better at non-superhero titles.
