Maybe it’s because I missed all the Spoiler stuff because I just started reading comics again right around Green Lantern: Rebirth, so Spoiler just doesn’t mean that much to me.
That said, I still thought the stories were as weak as the art. I find Albuquerque’s art to be amateurish and sloppy, and it was half the reason I dropped Blue Beetle. Story and art-wise, Blue Beetle and Robin/Spoiler Special aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.
I’m not hating, I may be hated after writing this, and I should be offering more to my criticism to truly base it in, but I just read the thing (blazed through it wondering if it had any point to it), and I was left empty and I wondered what the second story set in Africa had to do with anything.
This could have been a $2.99 issue with the second story cut out and maybe a reason to care about the first story…and it would have been worth the money.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. I loved, loved, loved Albuquerque’s art and will be seeking out more from him in the future.  The African story served to show what Stephanie had been up to and to show that she was always going to be a hero, no matter what the setting.  She was Spoiler even in hiding.

  2. I was afraid I was the only one who didn’t like this!

I did like the artwork in both stories though, but I was the same as you after reading them, with that same empty feeling of … "What was the point of that?" Both stories seemed pretty hollow and nothing of much (if any) impact happened. Yeah, we got to see what Spolier was doing in Africa, but that could have been covered in a few pages of a flashback in Robin’s book.

I’m a huge Chuck Dixon fan and was pretty surprised by this (pretty artwork aside) yawn of a book. i think everything covered in the whole book (both stories) could easily have been covered in Robin in a single issue, and the majority of the actual plot/character development could have been told in one or two pages.

Maybe DC didn’t wanna give too much away in this book because not everyone would buy it at this price tag? Or maybe I’m just biased & didn’t enjoy this book because I have always disliked The Spoiler, who knows?

  3. I really enjoyed this book a lot.  I thought it helped me understand Stephanie better and her reasonings behind Spoiler.  It served to fill in those of us reading Robin, where she just came back.  But I appreciate your opinion.  Obviously, if you didn’t like the art that much, you were probably not going to dig the comic.

  4. @WadeWilson – If you’ve always disliked SPoiler chances are you’re going to dislike a book mostly about her.  🙂  The SPECIAL was really for people like Neb who had no idea who Stephanie was.

  5. Thanks to WadeWilson for agreeing with me, I truly felt like the only one who thought the art sucked.

To Neb…I didn’t care much for the art in the latest issue of Detective either, but I loved the story.  So the story saved the book for me.  There are plenty of books out there with mediocre art that I’m still buying because the story is so good.

I bought this issue because I wanted to know more about Spoiler and I love Robin…I wound up still knowing very little about Spoiler, and only got half a Robin story.  That’s why I’m most disappointed…but I still think Albuquerque’s art is sloppy.  I’d rather see the guy who drew the two-page "Above the Influence" ad’s art over Albuquerque’s.

  6. @PhantomPhrenemy – I liked the art in the book! I agree that not enough happened or was explained about Spoiler though. But, like Conor said, even if we got all we wanted to know about Stephanie & her comeback from the dead, I probably still wouldn’t have liked this book, because I don’t like the character.

My favourite issue with her in it, was the one where Black Mask killed her. lol. But … I guess now that didn’t even happen …

  7. I love Alberquerque’s art in general which is the reason why I bought this in the first place even though I have no idea where these plot threads are starting and ending. To me, Alberquerque is really underrated and is equally adept at goofy light-hearted stuff like Blue Beetle as well as his first (?) book, Crimeland, a gritty action piece. I haven’t read the book yet, but I most definitely will very soon.

  8. My favourite issue with her in it, was the one where Black Mask killed her. lol.

    Yes, that’s hilarious.

  9. Thanks?

Kinda hard to tell what’s sarcasm online.

  10. @WadeWilson  I was reacting to the "lol" about a character being brutally murdered.

I’m not trying to be humorless here, but it struck me as a bit much.  Just a gut reaction.

  11. Well, death in comics is pretty meaningless mostly — eg: Spoiler’s not dead.

So, I don’t take it (or anything) too seriously. I was just making a bad joke about how much I dislike like the character.

  12. *dislike the character

I gotta start reading my posts before clicking submit …

  13. @WadeWilson  —  You may not be aware of this, but Stephanie’s death was major flashpoint of feminist discontent with the way DC comics does things (ie, I’ve never read Robin, and I know about this development and am reading up on this book out of secondary interest) and the reason she’s not dead anymore is at least partly a response to some very heated criticism, mostly from female fans.

So that’s why it seemed like poor taste to me.  Not to say you have to like the character.  I have no opinion on her either way.

  14. I had no idea about any feminist discontent with DC. I was aware Spoiler was brought back to life because of fan reaction online though … and now I know who to blame? lol.

My personal dislike of the character has nothing to do with her sex, if that makes any difference? I always thought she made the rest of the bat-crew look bad, because her training for the streets was taking some karate lessons & making a costume and she was a vigilante. See "Kick-Ass" for what I think would happen to someone like this in Gotham City. Like … anyone can just throw on a costume & do what Batman & Robin do? I always hated that.

But yeah, if making a joke about the bogus-murder of a character you don’t even like is a "bit much" & "poor taste" to you … I better make sure not to crack wise about characters you’re actually into! 😛
