This is the way the book ends

This is the way the book ends

This is the way the book ends

With something of a bang and a whimper.

I won’t ruin the details for anyone who’s going to pick this up in trades, but the way the mystery works out…the jury’s out on this one still.  To me, this was wrapped up with the Wayne’s World “super happy ending,” when that was not the direction the whole series was going towards.  I will say that the art gives it away, going from being dark and oppressive to very bright and sunny.  I’m wondering if Nelson’s heart was still in it at the end, or if he was in a rush to finish on behalf of the movie being made, or if this was always the ending and I just didn’t like it.  It’s an interesting concept and take on the Grail lore, it just seemed like the wind came out of the sails and we got to the end very quickly.

As a series, though, it’s definitely a must read.  As an issue, especially an end…you’ll have to decide for yourself when you get there.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Hullo, Brian! It’s Arvid, scribbler of Rex Mundi. I would never, ever hold anyone in contempt for writing an unfavorable review of Rex Mundi, but I just wanted you to know  there will, in fact, be two more issues after #17. Definitely trying to make it more "bang" than "whimper"! But that, of course, is for you to decide. 🙂

  2. Oh, my bad.  Thank you for the info.  I thought this was the end since I didn’t see a solicit for a new issue.  And I knew it was coming to an end soon.  I look forward to seeing the REAL wrap up of the series, and thank you for reading my review.  One question: what happened to the newspaper at the end of each issue?  I loved that!

  3. No problem! If #17 were it, it would be a pretty suck-a-licious ending, you’re totally right!

le Journal de la Liberté, she is coming back for the last two issues! We just didn’t have room for ’em in 14, 15 and 16. But it’ll be two pages each in #18 and 19, to make up for it. 🙂
