This issue really ramps up the series. It feels like their is a lot going on, but it is presented in a way that serves the story. I felt like at any moment things could completly fall apart. It truly felt like a war was going on in the book. We see the effects of this rush on the characters' decisions for good and bad. It was great to see Comet show that no matter how reluctant he is and how gruff he acts he is truly a hero. The way he used his powers to fire his teammates guns to create a avenue of escape was awesome. Also we see how far Rann has fallen with the belief in Lady Styx. The attempted sacrifice of Hawkman was a horrifying moment that makes me wonder if their is redemption available for Sardath and the rest of the Rannians.
Two characters that really stood out to me were the Weird and Adam Strange. The Weird's confrontation with Synnar and his battle with the robot were great and allowed him to live up to his name. This series has caused me to grow found over a character I didn't care about to much when I was reading Mystery in Space. Adam's determination to save Rann no matter what blows up in his face and causes the death of another world. Moments like thisĀ cause me to wonder if he has the strength to overcome this failure. I'm also curious what Starman will do now that his home planet has been destroyed.
The art is great and the action scenes are drawn in a dynamic way. The transitions between scenes are laid out in a way that even if the location names were absent you would be aware of the change and able to figure out where the action is now. This is a great cosmic comic that really highlights DC's often neglected sci-fi elements. Starlin has proven to me that he could provide DC with a similar revival of their cosmic characters as that of DnA with Marvel's.
