This trade collects issues #1-6 of the New Exiles series.  The first story arc of this trade is pretty good.  I was hesitant about buying it (Claremont’s hasn’t been doing his best work lately and I’m not a big fan of Grummett’s art), but by the end of the initial story arc (issue 4), I was enjoying this book.

When the new story arc starts in the last two issues collected in this trade, I miss Grummett.  The new artist, Roberto Castro, is quite a jarring change.  He tends to make characters really sexy for no apparent reason.  It seemed trashy.

The biggest problem with this trade is that Claremont is relying too much on the reader’s prior knowledge.  He keeps referring to a “Diana Fox” personality that is trying to take over Sage’s mind.  It took me awhile to figure it out, but he’s referring to something that happened in the second trade of “New Excalibur”.  Sadly, I own this too and referred back to it, but most readers who pick this trade up on a whim probably didn’t read “New Excalibur”.  (Is it even still around?)

Overall, 2/3 of this trade is good.  I’m not sure if I’ll pick up the next trade.  If Grummett is back on art duties, there is a strong possibility. ( I can’t believe I just said that!)  Also, if Claremont gets over his obsession for Psylocke and Sage and writes some fresh stories with other characters, my chances for picking up the next trade will be even stronger.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 2 - Average
