Mark Millar has long been the cause of debate amongst comic book fans, and I’ve always stood on the positive side, defending his work as uber-violent and engaging. That is, until Nemesis came along; what started as a great, if overdone idea, has spiralled into a titanic mess with this final issue. The plot has devolved to the point of being nonsensical and the characters are wholly unlikeable; Millar tries to keep us engaging with a few twists and turns, but each of these feels contrived and lessens the impact of the previous three issues, as prior events are exposed as fantasies and falsehoods. To top it all off, Steve McNiven hands in some of the worst artwork of his career; stiff and ugly throughout, it is a mere shadow of the former glory he enjoyed on “Old Man Logan” and even “Civil War.” This was an ugly book; ugly to look at, ugly to read and ugly to experience. You can only hope that the film will improve upon this and iron out all the kinks, a la “Kick Ass,” but whereas that series had a handful of flaws, this has a boat-load.
