Brains over brawn is a great theme for a superhero comic. Here, there is a plot involving a mental face-off between the brilliant and passionate Hank Pym and the slightly more brilliant but coldly dispassionate Reed Richards. Although the details of the plot are not critical, rest assured that the future of Pym’s Mighty Avengers team relies directly on the result of this showdown.

A funny showdown of wits occurs in a very small subplot, in which minor characters Valeria Richards and Amadeus Cho inadvertently bump heads. But the creepiest moment in comics this year (yet one which feels oddly comfortable) is when Hank Pym is spied by Jarvis to be making out with…well, read it yourself. I’d hate to spoil this one.

This remains the choice among Avengers books, if only for this outstanding arc.
