Tomas Giorello’s lines are incredibly detailed. You can see the Frazetta influence but it is not derivative. Jose Villarrubia’s colors are full of intense earth tones that suggest a human society not far from the wilds of nature. Together this style is perfect for conveying both natural and supernatural elements and the rich cloths that are abundant in interiors and in the clothing of the psuedo Persian/Roman time period. The emotional intensity of the figures is wonderful.
The story is very well told of Thoth-Amon’s struggle to regain his power amidst those scheming for Conan’s throne.
I am so in awe of this team. They are putting together all the right elements to tell a Conan story that has earthy grit, emotional intensity, and the complexity and darkness of human desires. They put Conan at the center of all this who, being a remnant of simpler times, cuts through the BS of magic and political machinations to deliver swift justice and live a life of simple pleasures. Bravo to these guys who have really nailed what Conan is all about.
