I hate writing reviews with spoilers, but I gotta do it to really get my point about this issue across. What started out strongly for me has basically skidded to a cliched and very unsurprising ending for Roy. While I'm definitely on board for the changes going on in Ollie's life, I just don't get the point of Roy's role in it all. Yes, he lost his daughter and is in mourning. As any grieving hero has done in the past, he's sort of lost his mind. I don't have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is that Roy and Ollie are now on even ground: they've both killed someone involved in the Star City attack. So now, Roy is a crazy-ass killer. At least with Ollie, Krul has established him as a guilt ridden hero who seeks only redemption and the salvation of his city. Roy, on the other hand, looks like he could make love to a cow while eating pancakes and throwing knives at dealers so he can score some smack. Look, I wasn't the biggest Roy fan in the world-- I didn't have much connection with the character. But to see him fall so far, and so bizarrely, is just a real shame, and unlike Ollie, I don't really know how you bring him back.
There are some redeeming qualities to this issue. I thought the fight between Roy and Ollie was very solid, and the emotional impact of Ollie witnessing Roy murder the villain was well done. And the art, while not fantastic, was certainly serviceable and included some decent splash pages. Also, the direction of the fights was clear and interesting.
One thing that I can be glad of is that Roy's saga will be wrapped up in a different title because really, Krul's lost me on this one. While there are some decent things going on with this issue, I was more interested in the parts with Ollie than Roy. Hopefully, they'll find a way to bring this character back in a big way.
