This issue was pretty “meh” for me. It’s basically one big fight scene, which is not something I’m into, and the fight is the sort of thing you’ve seen before if you’ve ever encountered the Metal Men. Granted, the specific way the Metal Men were convinced to go after our JLIers was pretty creative, but it wasn’t enough of a hook to get me interested in the very rote fight scene.

The end of the issue kind of made me mad. Without spoiling too much, I can say that it looks like Winnick has found a sparkly new way to write Ice out of character. Fan-freaking-tastic. Seriously, would it be so bad if Tora was both an asskicker and her usual sweet self? But this is just speculation based on the very end of this issue and the blurb for the next one, so hopefully I’m wrong.

I actually quite liked the art here. I don’t think I have any major complaints with Lopresti’s art, for what I think is the first time ever, and there’s no gratuitous cheesecake this time, which is really all I’m asking for.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. whats wrong with having an issue where its a fight? This is just one chapter in a larger story. Sometimes action takes a while, some times character takes a while. I dunno..I’m viewing this as a collection rather than single comics at a time.

  2. So I’m not supposed to rate a series issue by issue because, theoretically, future issues might balance this one out? Writing for the trade is fine for people reading the trades, but it tends to lead to clunker individual issues, and this issue is a clunker.
