Matt Sturges has found his JSA voice. Hmmmm….. well more like he found a voice kind of like, former JSA scribe, Geoff John’s that COULD also be part of Sturges but then again might not be. Either way, the warm reflective tone worked well for the story.

Let’s try again…. Matt Sturges has found the JSA’s voice. Wait, the main really only featured speaking roles for four of the All Stars so perhaps I should say that Sturges has an idea for what characters he is most comfortable with. In recent interviews at Newsarama and CBR, Sturges has confessed to initially feeling pretty uneasy being without Willingham as a co-writer once the team split. He seems to feel like he has found his way a bit more since the first arc in both plot and characterization. If this issue is any indication of what is to come, I’d have to agree.

“Damage” is heartfelt, has substantial character and back-story development for two of the All Stars, and William’s art felt appropriate and not jarring for almost the entire story — still, there are a few spots, especially wide shots with a lot of background, that have the appearance of different parts of a room being drawn in different mediums and colored by different people.

It is hard to know how objective a reviewer can be when one has so disliked the story, dialog, and particularly the art for all of JSA All Stars’ main features until now. What I can be sure of is that I now plan to continue on this series for the foreseeable future.

I am still enjoying the Liberty Belle/Hourman second feature though sometimes the dialog is confusing as if the characters are supposed to have accents or use region specific phrases that I am not familiar with. Travis Moore and Dan Green consistently provide great classic styled visuals for the adventure/mystery themed script bumping the issue’s overall art score up to a 3. This team would work well for a 1940s set JSA series based on what I’ve seen so far.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good
