It looks like the best thing that could happen to this book is the worst thing happening to Tony Stark. Civil War served to polarize Tony among readers (and writers). In some ways it made him a more interesting, nuanced character, but it also led to a lot of confusion. Sometimes simpler is better. And Dark Reign simplifies Stark’s plight quite a bit. In a good way.

While Tony may have pissed you off before, he wasn’t an outright villain. Here, Norman Osborn steps up as the Villain-in-Charge, and he’s gunning for Tony Stark. This gives writer Matt Fraction a chance to show just how clever Tony is, and how– even as an underdog — you can’t count him out. In this issue Tony Stark becomes a fugitive from justice, but we also see that he’s still making plans. He’s still inventive and gutsy.

I’m definitely on board for this arc.

Larocca’s art gets complaints from some, but I think it looks good here. Reads smoothly, and the armor designs are nice. No complaints.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

Comments

  1. Agreed, Larroca did good here. I still prefer "sketchier" art work. I like to see the shading and crosshatching and stuff. But I liked this issue of his.

  2. Man, I must be missing something.  I’m not saying this was bad but I feel my excitement for this book dwindling.

Someone explain the awesome to me!  I want to like this issue!

  3. If you’re not having fun with it, I’m not really sure what I can say. It’s kind of a classic model — everything is stripped away from our hero, and now he’s on the run, nothing is safe, but he’s got his brains and he’s got his armor… I dunno, I just dig it. It’s clean, not mired in cross-overs or bogged down by continuity. I could give this arc to someone who has ONLY seen the Iron Man movie, and they could get it. This issue had me excited to see what Tony does next. And what Osborn does next. And what Pepper and Maria do next.
