This issue was, without a doubt, one of the strongest issues yet for this series. After spending the past two issues following Phyla and Drax, this issue sees the team come back together to get involved in the War of Kings event. The storyline is well told, and ties in well with what’s happening in the event, and it’s really nice to see the whole team back together again. This book also had two completely awesome laugh out loud moments. As faithful readers will know, one of the storytelling devices that Abnett and Lanning use is a sort of “Real World confessional” where the characters provide perspective on the events unfolding on the page. Usually, these are good for a joke or two, but in this issue, the team really outdid themselves. If you read the issue, and you got to Groot’s confessional, I’m sure that you too laughed out loud. There’s also this hilarious conversation between Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon as they discuss tactics regarding the team’s next step. The first 7 panels build to a completely excellent moment between the two characters on the last two panels that had me laughing out loud. And even though this issue contained some great jokes, it also had some great action and of course, some great story to go along with it.

Brad Walker did an excellent job drawing this book. I felt the pacing and timing of the issue was perfect, and he did a great job capturing the humor with the characters. His style really fits the book as it nails the fun and dynamic scripting of Abnett and Lanning.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Great review!  You captured my thoughts exactly!

PS: I agree that Groot’s confessional was hilarious, but what ever happened to the Groot from the Starlord mini-series?  Does Groot have brain damage from his two near-death experiences?

  2. @itiscritical~  I have no idea.  I never even heard of Groot until I started reading this series.  That’s a good Wiki question.  Or maybe someone smarter than me will come along and answer it for you.

  3. During the annihilation conquest event groot almost died in an explision…or something….and he returned to being a sapling to survive. He was that tiny little tree that Mantis was taking care of in the beginning of the series. I guess he’s gotten bigger now but i suppose he hasn’t recovered all of his mental capacity
