G.I. Joe is a property that, in the right hands can be done well. Over 25 years ago, Larry Hama was able to take a title that could have been relegated to the 80’s toy ghetto, and make it into a meditation on what it takes to be a soldier and a hero. The specter of Vietnam was never far from the main cast, giving the series a real world resonance that it would have otherwise lacked if it had only focused on the silly codenames and high-tech vehicles. In my opinion, with all the reboots and changing companies, “G.I. Joe: Cobra” is the only iteration of the Joe concept that has gotten things right again. This is the G.I. Joe book for the post 9-11 world. Gage and Costa are bringing back the emotional baggage that Snake Eyes and Stalker had from their experiences in Vietnam, and giving it too Chuckles via the war on terror. I look forward to this book every month, and it’s a shame that it may be overlooked by people who are too busy snatching up tie-ins to that abysmal looking movie version coming out this summer. If you haven’t read this book yet, pick up the first two issues and read it from the beginning. I don’t think it will disappoint.
