Before Flashpoint, I had never once in my entire life bought a comic book that said Aquaman or WW on it, and for that matter, I sure as hell never bought one that said Lois Lane on the cover either!! That’s is the beauty of event tie ins though, especially when it’s an event that I’m actually positively enjoying so far!! I get to sample one shots and three issue minis from writers I don’t usually hear much from, and of course, artists that I don’t keep up with on the regular also.

I’m sure all you giant comic book dorks who know everything and everybody in the industry know all about Andy Lanning already, but he is new to me being a guy who usually only reads Batman & Green Lantern titles. His pencils are quite exceptional!! I wish there were more pencilers, inkers, and colorists who could draw faces as well as these creators here, and do it well in an acceptable amount of time as well. The panels and layouts look pretty plain jane here, but not in a rushed kind of way. It’s almost as if they purposely left things a little dull because they didn’t have much story to work with.

The thing about the story though, is that it’s way to early to say if it’s any good or not yet. Sometimes I can tell what I’m getting into after reading the first installment of an arc and/or mini. Sometimes I just can’t yet. In this case, it’s the latter. There is just no way I could tell if the next installment will be good tie in filler, an absolute masterpiece, or utterly forgettable garbage at this point. As it stands now: I’m buying the next issue.

I hope once Flashpoint is said and done, and if I continue to buy myself this many tie ins in the coming months, that I will have a better idea of who’s who in the DCU (creator wise), so that I will know which titles to look out for come the big bad relaunch in September!

  1. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have handled the entire Marvel Cosmic run for the last few years from the epic sagas Annihilation,Annihilation:Conquest, while running Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy which both spawned out of Annihilation and run alongside these cosmic events then War of Kings to Realm of Kings and back to Nova and Guardians leading into Thanos:Ignition one-shot and all culminating into Thanos Imperative. Altogether with some Inhumans and Secret Invasion tie ins and a brief Nova touching down on Earth during the Initiative and basically telling Tony Stark to shove it, he’s got more pressing matters in space that make the mask unveiling seem insignificant. All this lead to the recently wrapped up mini also by Abnett and Lanning series Annihilators(the result of Thanos Imperative). I loved all of this about as much as I could love a great cosmic fix and if you read the trades in order and Nova and Guardians alongside from Annhilation to Thanos Imperative the ending is climatic and emotional and deals with the fates of a lot of great cosmic characters in the Marvel U. Hats off to Abnett and Lanning for handling the Cosmic corner of Marvel well and for so long. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning are the writing team on all this and much else together and have had some great artists on board through they’re cosmic saga. Lanning is also an Inker and currently inks on Ultimate Spiderman. If you love cosmic, this is a classic saga with a deep climax if your someone who comes to love the characters along the way.Enjoy!!!
