Let me start off by saying that I am not a Judd Winick fan. I usually use his name as a sort of derisive comment when I get all snarky about a book. So, the fact that I am thoroughly enjoying a Judd Winick comic has me questioning my sanity. As most of DC's "New 52!" books are wrapping up their first arcs, Winick is doing something that DC promised in it's relaunch, but did not deliver in most cases: a book that is not "written for the trade." Winick has done a masterful job of setting up a story in one issue, then wrapping it up by the middle of the next issue, and using that ending to springboard to the next story! In just five issues, we have wrapped up the pieces of everything that was laid out in earlier issues, but Winick has used the endings of plot points to set up what happens next. Selina gets wrapped up in a personal score in issue #1, leading to her not performing her due diligence... and it gets her fence killed in issue #2! She takes out the killers in issue #3... and the cops show up to catch Catwoman hovering over a dead body! This leads to the flight from the police in the next issue... and so on and so on. While most of DC's books are finally getting around to finishing what they set up on page one of their first issue, "Catwoman" is already five steps past it. Winick balances the fun and flighty life of a cat burglar with the very real and shocking violence that life can lead to very well. One minute, Selina is enjoying her crimes and the next she is suddenly haunted by the consequences. Catwoman has a smile on her face as she leads the GCPD on a chase through the city, only to be shocked when the entire force is waiting for her and ready to take her out. I freely admit that I picked up #1 simply for the Guillem March art, but Winick's story has me hooked. His melding of fun and furious storytelling, combined with some of the better cliffhangers of any of this new crop of DC books, has me coming back for more every month. I never thought I would ever get wrapped up in a Catwoman book again, but here I am. Makes me wonder if I missed the boat on some of Winick's other recent books as well.
