Captain America Operation Rebirth is one of the greatest Cap stories ever. It brought Captain America back from the edge of relevance and propelled him to the very forefront of comics where he remains to this day. To better understand this book’s significance, we must first look upon the events that brought it about to begin with.

It was the early 90’s, a young and debonair William Clinton was President. It was also a time of unprecedented comic sales, and though the industry boomed the work suffered.  Most comic book characters had to be edgy and dark. Batman was replaced with Azrael who was willing to kill his enemies. They turned Nomad, Cap’s once partner into a mullet sporting, trench-coat wearing, motorcycle driving, sawed-off shotgun, wielding cliche’. Spiderman was replaced by ripped jacket wearing Ben Reily.  Instead of Thor we had Thunderstrike, who whore a ponytail and a sleeveless leather jacket. They eventually gave the 90’s treatment to Cap by first making him lose his Super-Soldier powers, and than by giving him a mech suit and that’s when every Captain America fan cried and dropped the book. So with most of the fan base gone Marvel killed off Captain America. These were the dark times of comics.

Than the talented writer Mark Waid came along with the intention of revitalzing Captain America by reminding the fans what they love about him in the first place. With amazing art by Ron Garney, who was often been stated as being born to draw Cap, Mark Waid wrote one of the greatest Cap tales ever. He revives Steve Rogers and has him reluctently team up with the Red Skull and his long lost love, Sharon Carter, to finally complete his whole reason for being in the first place. Yes Captain America vs Hitler happens in this book and it’s not what anyone was expecting.

In all Comic fans owe a lot to this book. Without this book it would not have been Cap leading the Anti-Registration movement, and we would be deprived of Ed Brubaker’s amazing Captain America run now. This book is essential for all Captain America fans and will forever be remembered as the book that truly brought Cap back.
