So last issue was the first time I ever read Northlanders and I thought it was great. I decided to pick up the first trade and have enjoyed that as well. Thus begins the Trilogy which is told throughout nine issues with three arcs. It is described as a “generational crime drama” or as Mark Doyle put it “Think The Godfather but, you know, with vikings.” The last page of this issue makes that statement quite believable. Oh yes the stage has been set for historical violence, often the most brutal kind. The art is ugly when it needs to be and I only mean that as a compliment. I felt kinda dumb for not having discovered this wonderful ongoing earlier but I think I came in at a perfect time. This is my kinda story, I love gangster films with realistic violence, and I like historical fiction. So cheers to this ambitious brutal crime drama, you had me at brutal.
