This book came out of the shadows, like a criminal in Hell’s Kitchen, and slapped me with a dose of reality:  this book can be good without Daredevil.  Black Panther leaps down into the sordid alley of my surprise and brings home a really solid first issue.  The story brings us up to speed with just how Black Panther ended up in Murdock’s shoes, and it’s interesting to see the character so out of his element.  He has no super powers, no kingdom, and no wife.  He’s just a man trying to find himself.  Liss does a nice job of making T’Challa interesting without making him overly mopey.  The villain in the series is shaping up to be interesting as well as he’s someone we’ve never seen before.  With his foreign background, he has that creepy edge to his dialogue where you’re not quite sure whether he’s going to hug you or kill you.  Some may complain of the wordiness of the comic, which it is, but I wasn’t bothered by it.  It made the comic feel meaty, and I was engrossed by what I was reading.  Of course, Francavilla’s art is totally awesome.  I want a copy of the page where Black Panther has laser sights on him and in the next panel he’s leaping over crates amid gunfire.  It’s solid storytelling, and much like his Twart sketches, these pages certainly please the eye.  There was no point where I was lost or didn’t know what was going on.  It’s just excellent comic booking in an excellent comic.
