Ah the book I books I buy on a whim. Avengers Academy is now on its second month on my pull list and its around where it was last month for me. To avoid any real openings lets just sink into the book itself.
The cover is misleading and done for shock value and so is the tagline. This is par for the course in most comics but it always bothers me. THas said though the cover art by David Yardin is pretty damn good. The inside art though is again basic "comic style" art and simply isn't enough to wow me. Thats not to say the art is bad, far from it; yet at the same time it simply doesn't have the umph a lower tier book like this needs to stand out.
The story in contrast is still the nice character centric approach that Christos Gage does best. What drew me to this book was X-23, Mettle, and ESPECIALLY Hazmat so I was happy to see them all get at least one line of dialouge in this issue unlike previous ones and the hazmat/mettle friendship is shown to be as strong as ever in this issue which makes the fanboy in me happy. Also some SERIOUS love for Hank Pym in this issue.
But at the same time with the good comes the terribly annoying and that comes in the form of Jocosta and Jeremy Briggs. These two characters may as well be cutouts from the millions of X-men stories that involve the "Theses kids shouldn't be fighting" argument that we JUST got over in the X-books. I make it no secret that my favorite team is the X-men but that doesn't mean that I want Avengers Academy to be the same book. "What are the Avengers doing about global warming"......no I'm not kidding people that line is in this book but gladly it is the low point.
In Short: The books art is not bad by a long shot but it doesn't tickle my fancy nor does it stand out in color or inking like some other books do. The story is still great when it comes to the characters but the conflict is something even non-comic fans have seen a million times and even though it resolves itself during the issue the entire thing seemed like a filler issue until the coming crossover with the runaways.
