Huh.

Without reading any solicits, I was curious what this title would be like.  Tied into continuity?  Elseworlds?  Ultimate Universe?  What If?  The answer appears to be Elseworldsish.  Wolverine and Spider-Man trapped in prehistory.  As a one-off story, it’s ok.  But I didn’t get to the last page and think “I can’t wait for the next issue.”  It was more of a “Well….I certainly just read that.  Yeup.  Somebody wrote that.  Huh.”

I know Jason Aaron is one of the writers that gets raved about on this site, but I find him, at best, mediocre when he’s working on superheroes.  Yes, I think Scalped is excellent.  But his Wolverine Weapon X series just doesn’t connect with me, I don’t care about Ghost Rider, and his Punisher story was…not bad.  And that’s how I felt about this.  It wasn’t bad.  But I have no interest in reading more of it.

  1. No Devil Dinosaur excitement for you?  I really enjoyed the story and thought the way he showed similarities between the two and their mind was pretty cool.  To each his own, I jumped at this because I loved his run on Ghost Rider.

  2. I’m with akamuu, Aaron’s superheroe stuff is usually underwhelming. Although I do like his Punisher Max series a lot so far.

  3. Totally with you on Aaron’s marvel work.  His arcs on WOLVERINE and WEAPON X have been pretty below average

  4. @cutty I haven’t enjoyed his Wolverine work either.  I thought I was somewhat alone there.

  5. @forestjwp: I like dinosaurs, and ape societies, but this one didn’t make me all tingly inside.  I’m glad some people are enjoying it, it just wasn’t for me.

@JesseG, cutty & vadamowens: I liked the first issue or two of WeaponX, and thought it had promise, but then it just got…well, underwhelmed really is the best word for it.  I hope that changes as his non-superhero work has been superb.

  6. I thought his first Weapon X arc was OK. It started kind of bad but ended well.  His second arc was awesome and ended awesome.  His Punisher stuff has been kind of "meh" but I think he is trying to hard to be like Ennis. Aaron did a Punisher MAX X-Mas special that was fantastic.  Also his Black Panther S.I. stuff was great.  I never read his Ghost Rider stuff because Huat’s artwork is terrible.  After listening to the podcast I was thinking of picking this up but I might pass.
