Dan Slott knows how to write a classic Bronze age tale. What this issue does is not only continue the established story, but also builds on classic Spider-man cannon. What I love is how effective Mysterio is being used. Old Mysterio stories tended to be one and done. Dan Slott has shown how power he can be and how smart he is. First I loved the flashback with Carlie visiting her father in the Crime Lab with Captain Stacey and Jean De Wolfe. Jean De Wolfe never gets referenced and her death was part of the Venom origin. Now I’m not loving the subplot of Aunt May under Mr Negative’s influence, but I like that it keeps the rhythm of the story going. My favorite moment though had to be the scene where Peter figures out that Mysterio is behind it. Spider-man is confronted by the Big Man and his gang (that hasn’t been scene since Amazing 50) and reveals that Captain Stacey was the leader. Only Spider-man knows the truth and his anger calling out Mysterio is perfect writing an art. I can’t wait for the conclusion, which is a great sign.
