Was this issue the bestest, most wonderful piece of work in the world? No. But it did the following things pretty well:
1) Johnny Storm realizing he should know who Spider-Man was. Firstly, I never knew that he had ever revealed his identity to the FF, but then I haven't been reading Spider-Man forever (only since 1998 in issues, and then just Spectacular back when there were four ongoing books). But if there was one character that was going to realize it, Johnny was it. Of all the characters in the larger MU, Johnny has been the closest to Peter, so it makes sense. "Why didn't Mr. Fantastic question it?" one could ask. He's the classic absent-minded professor, it probably crossed his mind and then slipped out as he pondered a new neutrino or something. Sue and the Thing probably didn't care enough to realize it, but Johnny would know. And I'm glad that this universal mind-wipe is finally getting addressed.
2) Peter Parker is smart. In all the wise-cracking, villain-beating, bullet-dodging fights that we see Spider-Man in, or the standard "woe is me" Peter stories, most writers have stopped addressing the fact that Peter is one of the brightest scientific minds in all of the MU. Maybe not Tony Stark, Reed Richards, or Hank Pym smart, but equal to Bruce Banner and certainly in the top 10 of intelligent Marvel heroes. That doesn't mean that it should become a focus, like they did with one of his relaunches where he gave up the costume and went to work at a research facility, but organically bring it up more. Using the FF is a good place to do that. Speaking of which...
3) Classic "fun" FF. They are the explorers and pioneers of the MU, and this showcases that perfectly. Even if that's all you know of the FF (like myself), that's fine. You'll definitely enjoy this.
I'm interested to see how this week's issue deals with Johnny's shocked reaction to Spidey's unmasking. Hopefully it's not going to involve a forced ret-con of "I know you from..." I'm also interested in seeing if this somehow "breaks the spell." How much would it suck now if Norman remembered that he knew Spider-Man's identity. I'm sure it's building that way- hence the "Universe-Affecting Storyline" they're touting in the solicits. Overall, good issue; not "amazing" but good.
