First issues are always my favorite comics to read.  There is no limit to what may be contained
within that first issue.  Anything could
happen and that potential is what creates such an optimistic feeling in the
reader.  It’s even better when the issue
delivers on that potential and you discover the beginning of something
wonderful.

In 7 Psychopaths #1,
two men set out with the task of rounding up a group of individuals to
assassinate Hitler at the beginning of the World War II.  The theory being that only psychopaths would
take on such a mission without the realization of what they are attempting to
do is impossible.

While on the surface the series may sound similar to the
film Inglorious Basterds, the only
thing the two do have in common is that each has a group of people attempting
to assassinate Hitler.  7 Psychopaths is entertaining and
surprisingly funny, given the subject matter.
The first issue is purely the ‘recruitment issue’ as the men behind the
idea try to gather their seven team members.
There is much discussion on why there is to be seven, why they must all
be psychotic and how they will attempt to complete their equally psychotic
mission.

Considering this is only a three issue series the amount of
time spent in this issue gathering only part of the team seems off-pace.  A third of the series has already gone by and
the team isn’t yet complete.  Aside from
the pacing issue this series is off to a terrific start featuring fantastic art
by Sean Phillips (Criminal) and great
combination of war-time dramatic story telling and off beat humor and charm.

  1. Dude, did you get a early copy?

  2. @darth judging by what I’m reading, this is the first act of a series of arcs.  So the first 3 issues may very well all end up establishing the characters.

  3. I missed that!  Thanks for the update!
