   Even though I never collected it, I fondly remember seeing Marvel Presents: the Guardians of the Galaxy on the stands as a kid. It wasn’t until they started appearing in Avengers (The Korvac Saga) that I got to know the characters and really started appreciating the team.

    This volume includes all (most?) of their pre-Marvel Presents stories including the team’s origin from a 1968 issue of Marvel Super-Heroes. With the exception of that story, the Guardians are really guest-stars in all of the stories. Even so, you’ll get a good taste of 70s Marvel with cameos by Wundarr (the Aquarian) and Namorita, and a couple of classic Defenders stories — written by the wonderful Steve Gerber. Starhawk makes his debut in the last two stories in the book, and we see a glimpse of the Mercurians — the race from which "future" gunslinger heroine Nikki originates. The only black mark of the volume is a Giant-Size Defenders story that features some of the worst Don Heck artwork I’ve ever seen.

   The second volume should be out this Summer, and I’m expecting a jump in quality when the stories focus on just the Guardians.
