Whedon’s AVENGERS to Face Kree, Skrulls?

Film site Before the Trailer reported some Avengers casting opportunities for potential extras in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area. That report also includes a synopsis which may shed some light on the plot for the 2012 film. Let's take a look:

"A superhero team called “The Avengers” do battle against two separate alien extraterrestrial humanoid life forms. The Avengers are a superhero team, consisting of a group of Marvel Comics heroes aka “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”. The aliens that The Avengers will fight are called “The Kree” and “Skrulls”. These two extraterrestrial races become embroiled in a war for ages that ultimately makes its way to Earth, and the Avengers unite to intervene with all their power and might combined."

If this synopsis is indeed accurate, and not simply a "Revenge of the Jedi" style smokescreen, I'm going to go ahead and deem this movie the most ambitious Hollywood project since, I dunno, Cleopatra.

I'm still pretty astonished there's a live action Avengers movie in the works and it isn't headed straight to video or Syfy. But now we're also looking at a cinematic depiction of the Kree/Skrull war? It's a lot of content for a single film. That said, Whedon does have the benefit of the characters' solo films as introduction. No need to rehash any origins (though we'll see how much thawing Cap needs to do between the epilogue of The First Avenger to his second act in The Avengers. With all the buildup to this crossover, we're looking at a plot-heavy movie that can focus on an alien conflict right from the start. No small challenge, but they're shooting for the moon.

And hey, if you're in New Mexico and decide to try out for this extra gig, let us know about the experience!

Comments

  1. If anyone can do it, it’s Joss Whedon.

  2. Now we just need a clip at the end of the Captain America credits showing some villain or other on an operating table and morphing into a Skrull.

  3. I don’t know where i heard it, but there was talk, i think, of the skrulls already being on earth, and maybe the kree are looking for them, they start a fight, and who do you call.

and this is probably a smart move on Marvel’s part. think of the possibilities that this could add for future spin offs and franchise.

  4. Isn’t this an old story?  Or at similar to one?  Don’t I recall an earlier Albequerque newspaper getting their hands on the Kree/Skrull synopsis, only to have the story denied, denied, denied by Whedon and Marvel Studios?

  5. Pardon me for a moment; reading this seems to have knocked my brain out of my skull.

  6. Woah.  Like Paul said, if this is true, this is very ambitious…..it could turn out to be awesome but I dunno, guess we will see.

  7. A week ago the news was that it was Loki tricking the Skrulls into invading Earth, can’t remember where I read that…could all be misdirection. I believe the only thing Joss Whedon has said himself is that it will be Starlin-esque and that if we want some idea where he’s going with it we need to look at the Adam Warlock and Captain Marvel stuff – but I think that’s more to do with the Avengers team dynamic than who the bog bads will be.

The only thing that confuses me is that it’s not shooting yet and apparently is concrete for release May 2012. It’s going to be tight!

  8. Why are we assuming one film? This concept could easily be scaled to an epic trilogy …

  9. Shane Black said that Marvel were through with team ups and crossovers, remember?

    (I’m being sarcastic).

  10. @boosebaster  Yes, after the Avengers film. (And just because one director says something doesn’t mean plans can’t change.)

  11. @Conor, I know mate, that’s why I was being sarcastic about Black’s comments 🙂

  12. Very ambitious, but if executed I think this could be a lot of fun.

I can’t believe we haven’t seen the cosmic stuff before but I guess now with an Avengers it’s a good time as any to introduce it into ‘film’ continuity. I just wonder who would play as the Super Skrull? Cause I’m sure he will be the ringleader for the entire army of Skrulls.

Also, maybe this is a way to bring the Inhumans into continuity before their film?

  13. Three words, “Buffy, Astonishing X-Men” – enough said…

  14. I think its probably too ambitious to be honest

  15. Am I the only one who doesn’t like the Kree-Skrull War story? I bought that trade, as it is considered the “premiere” Avengers story ever by a lot of people, an I read it and it was very “eh.” I didn’t see the big deal at all.

  16. Correct me if I’m wrong, its been a while since I’ve read it and I loaned my trade to someone I lost contact with (D’oh!) but isn’t the second Ultimates story Homeland Security I think about the Skrulls?  And didn’t it start in WW2 with Cap?
