Ultimate Spider-Man to Die, Get New Costume. In That Order.

As revealed in this morning's print edition of The New York Post, Marvel is sending its Ultimate universe version of Spider-Man to the tailors.

Illustrated by Sara Pichelli, this new image shows the wall-crawler in an all-too-familiar pose but sporting a new red-on-black costume. Although the designer hasn't been named yet, the design keeps a lot of the classic elements of the classic Steve Ditko design while updating the color scheme and tweaking the pattern on the chest. Although not as off-the-wall as the late-90s Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider design, this Ultimate version fits between the original and the all-black costume which debuted in Secret Wars #8 and designed by Mike Zeck.

This revamp is set to take place after the events of the "Death of Spider-Man" storyline. Also, that's not Peter Parker behind the mask either, apparently.

It's coming your way, polybagged, in June with Ultimate Spider-Man #160.

Comments

  1. Call me crazy, but I like it. I just kind of hate that they had an opportunity to kill Ultimate Peter in the whole “Ultimatum” hulabaloo, and they specifically didn’t kill him off then, only to do it two years later.

  2. I think I might start reading this series once the new costume and person steps up. I think it could be a good jumping on point

  3. i’m just thankful the book isn’t ending. bendis writes the ultimate universe like no one else

  4. Considering were the bullet hit him in Ultimate Avengers vs New Avengers (or whatever the title is)….I think that Peter is not dead but rather paralized (like Oracle at DC)and thus he cannot be Spider-Man anymore so “Death of Spider-man” indeed.

And Ultimate Ben Reilly perhaps?…another clone running around?…

  5. Marvel says the point of the polybag is not to spoil anyone in the store.
Yet they submit press releases a week earlier or in this a month or so, pretty much telling us what’s going to happen.

    That’s frustrating business practice.

  6. I think it is gonna be his female clone. She has been floating around for a while.

  7. The costume reminds me an awful lot of May Parker Venom costume in Earth X.

  8. That is Great redesign/alteration

    Jim Lee- Take note.

Now if it’s made from something a little more high tech other than normal cloth with some impact/temperature etc abilities

    all the better.

  9. We’ve reached the point where issuing a press release announcing that Spider-Man has a new costume is like me issuing a press release announcing that I have changed my shirt. Counting this, I can think of three in the last six months.

But it got into the Post, so that shows what I know.

  10. @JohnnyStooge  yeah they submit a press release saying someone else is in the costume but we still have no idea who, or why or what happens to peter. this isn’t new. when superman died we knew a month before the issue with doomsday that 4 guys claiming to be superman were taking over his books. it happens

  11. Is he going to wear that in the casket?

  12. I guess Marvel finally found a use for Alex Ross’s costume concept from Spider-Man 1.

  13. @TheLastSon21  i thought the same thing when i saw it, although i like this better. hated the eyes on the ross design

  14. Yay – Sara Pichelli art! Hope this means that she is going to be the new regular artist.

  15. @RoiVampire I haven’t been reading any articles about this Death of Spider-Man arc. USM is a book I enjoy sort of not knowing anything about it. For all I knew Peter was actually going to die and USM would be finishing with #160. And I kinda wanted to keep any revelation a surprise. Little disappointing, but not much I can do now.

  16. I’m with ya Roi.  I really dig Pichelli’s art. She’s so good.  @JohnnyStooge, I really don’t think they’re going to kill off Peter for very long.  At Least I hope not.

  17. Chris… MAN you’ve got to stop with the tabloid’ish article titles.  The Bendis one was REALLY ridiculous because it was completely untrue, propagating your own hypothesis about how he would quit writing comics… but now this?

Sorry, but you’re single handedly bringing down the quality of the site for me.

We’re not walking by this shit in a grocery store check out aisle.

  18. @diebenny  It’s a preview image, sent to us by Marvel, and talking about the possible design influences of the costume. What are you talking about?

  19. @diebenny  dude he’s just posting a press release marvel sent him. calm down.

@TheLastSon21  If she is the new artist i will do a dance of joy to rival all dances of joy performed thus far

  20. whats the point of pollybagging to avoid in store spoilers if every customer already had it spoiled via previews/the interwebs months earlier? The Polybagging thing is a very transparent (pardon the pun) to increase sales on one specific issue by creating a fake event for speculators. Also known as the phyrric victory hail mary play.

  21. at the risk of being a negative wally from the above comment,  the new costume does look pretty cool, and i like the idea of using someone else besides Peter Parker as spidy in the Ultimate Universe.

  22. [Insert Negative Comment About Marvel’s Horrible Business Plan Here]

On the new costume I really like it. The contrast with the large black spots and the small, red lines really makes it stand out.

  23. I know it won’t happen, but this could be a way to  appease the very small collective of Ben Reilly fans.  Probably would have been set up before know but a fanboy can hope.

  24. Also, if we have to play the guessing game, I’m going to assume a guy is under that new costume cause if it’s Kitty then she’s hiding a lot of her body….

It’s probably going to be either Iceman or Human Torch under there. I’ll go for the latter because after reading that Ultimate Enemy trilogy the FF is really out of control thanks to Bendis.

  25. @TheNextChampion  It would be so cool and awesome if johnny was filling peters shoes in the ultimate universe and peter was filling his in the 616 universe

  26. i am MORE than ok with this. i always wondered why ultimate spider-man had such a similar costume compared to the 616 spidey. If teh ultimate universe is supposed to be so different than 616, why not give Ultimate Pete a more distinguishable look? cant wait for this.

  27. @josh Article titles.  Tenth and eleventh words into my post.  The first thing you see before clicking and reading more on your web-site.  Not the content or the preview images.

If you guys like groan inducing tabloid’ish article titles, then to each his own, but I don’t.

If I could have avoided the article’s TITLE I would have.

Especially hot on the heels of “Bendis Calling It Quits On Conventions — Could Comics Be Next?” by the same person.

Maybe that isn’t your opinion, but if I feel like this trend continues we’ll have a parting of ways. Not that you care.

While we’re at it though, take a look at your competition’s titles for the same press release.

  28. Didn’t they do a clone saga in the Ultimate U already? Isnt’t that how we got Ultimate Jessica Drew?

  29. @RazorEdge757  I agree with you about the clone.  Love the new suit!

  30. My guess is that Peter lives and Johnny Storm/Rick Jones steps in for a short period of time before Peter returns like a year later.

  31. It’s Ultimate Bob Reynolds under there.

  32. Could it be Ultimate Scorpion under there? Just a thought, but either way I absolutely love the new costume! Its modernized without being disrespectful of the classic look. Really awesome. Sucks that Pete’s supposed to “die” but whatever.

  33. I like the costume design. As soon as I saw this pic, I set it as my iPhone lockscreen wallpaper.

  34. @diebenny  I wrote that title. We try to have fun with it. The story is “the death of spider-man”. I really don’t understand what your problem with it is. I thought it was kind of a joke. You’re right in that we do try to differentiate ourselves from other comic websites. If it’s not your cup of tea, I’m sorry, but we can’t please everyone every time.

You didn’t like the Bendis piece. I get that. I also take responsibility for that. But that was one piece, over a month ago. We’ve done hundreds of pieces since then, you’re probably not going to like them all. Lots of masters to please, and we’re just doing our best.

And I do care what you think. I want everyone to like us.

  35. Interesting. It’s still odd to think this book has been coming out so long that they’ve gotten to a point where people feel the need to shake it up this much.

    I’m cautiously optimistic.

  36. at least whoever it is doesn’t have a basketball for a head under that mask.

  37. Calling it now:

Peter won’t die, but it’ll be a very close run thing. Mary Jane/Aunt May/the extended cast will basically convince Peter to hang up the webs, at least until he’s gotten his SHIELD training.

I’m guessing that this new costumed spider-man is Peter a few years later, post-SHIELD training, or a SHIELD agent filling in for him. Before this image came out, I was sure that the femclone of Peter was going to fill in, but I guess that’s out.

  38. Hey does any one kind of get the feeling it looks a little bit like the Bucky Cap suite?

  39. I stopped reading te ultimate universe after ultimatum. Is ultimate spidey still pretty much the only thing worth reading? I know some people who are really hating on the death of spiderman arc, but most of you guys seem to be enjoying it.

  40. @SecretSeventh  spidey has been great since ultimatum, pick up tghe trades sir

  41. @Avistann  more like a good jumping off point. Been a good run. I’m out.

  42. @iSteve & RazorEdge757: I’m not reading USM so I can’t really challenge your guess. But is this female clone completely flat-chested? And does she have a bulge in her pants? This is clearly a dude.

As far as the design goes; I’m a fan. It’s somehow nostalgic while also adding to the trend of stream-lining every character redesign as much as possible. Plus, ya just can’t beat the combo of red and black IMO.

  43. i like the costume better than the new 616 ones that have been around recently.

@diebenny- dont you think you’re a bit over the top? You’re that annoyed by the title of some of the articles?

  44. I wonder how many issues in before we see who it is?

It could still be Peter Parker under there, just not “Peter Parker”. Maybe his identity gets exposed by Osborn and Peter has to change his name.

  45. I would definitely enjoy a story of Peter possibly in an Oracle type position like @CZor mentioned, just not permanently. Show Peter is still around, but not able to be Spiderman for a while due to whats happened in the lastest Ultimate Spidey issue, and whatever else he has to deal with until the end of this story. Show that he will one day be able to Spiderman again, just not any time soon and have him mentor the new person to take up the mantle.

  46. Does this mean that it won’t be polybagged?  Or at least can I get that cover in chromium?

  47. Can’t wait to get my polybagged digital version of this.

  48. I give this until the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon shows up on the air in 2012 or just before the new movie hits before Peter dons the webs again, if it’s not something like what @TheGoddamnDeadpool suggests, which is something I was thinking. Not the time-jump, but the whole new identity angle. And New York is such a big city, they could get away with new names if they were relocated to even another borough, I’d think, right?

But if that were the case, the new name couldn’t be Ben Reilly. Simply because that was the name of Dr. Connor’s lab assistant during the Ultimate Venom storyline and the dude who stole and sold the samples that led to the creation of Ultimate Carnage. Wasn’t he also responsible for Peter’s DNA getting into the hands of Doc Ock for the Ultimate Clone Saga also?
