‘The Surrogates’ goes to Disney

Looks like the effect 300 has had on movie studios is apparent and fairly quick. Disney has acquired the rights to develop a movie of The Surrogates by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele.

The Surrogates was published by Top Shelf and is a great sci-fi thriller of a future where people live life through robotic substitutes. I picked up the trade at the New York Comic Con and am reading it now, and so far it’s really good.

What I find interesting is this is a fairly indie book — so it’s almost as if the movie studios have moved beyond the Big 2 companies and are starting to mine the independents for properties, which could yield some interesting results…

  1. The concept for this book sounds really interesting. Kind of like a Kurt Vonnegut type story. I’m definitely nterested in scoping this title out.

By the way, a Sub-Mariner movie? Ugh. That will be a stinking pile of whale doo.

  2. I borrowed this trade from Ron and read it as we sat in the Oakland airport after Wonder Con during our 90 minute flight delay – I really liked it. It’s good.

  3. I want a Sleeper movie. That’d rock!

  4. I remember seeing the first issue of that at last year’s Megacon’s Top Shelf table and being kind of disappointed that they would go into something so… action-y.

    Now I wanna read it.

  5. I had an afterthought: Is this a mature book? Like, should we expect to see a Disney-fied version of the movie. Or is this something that fits their brand? Thoughts from those that have read it…

  6. For those of you who haven’t read it, you should. It is a lot of fun and very creative. Rob (the writer) has been a good friend and customer of mine for quite some time. He did a signing in our store and we joked him about the book being made into a movie. I guess that means we should get a piece of the money.

  8. I have had this in my stack, then not bought it almost every week since it came out. Guess I’ll finally have to.
