The Secret Geography of the DC Universe: Mapping The World of FLASHPOINT

Little did we know earlier this week (straight up) when we started posting maps of the DC Universe, but today, DC unveiled a brand new map. This is the world as we'll get to know it this summer in Flashpoint

This image from Rex Ogle and Freddie E. Williams II showcases a strange new world where a vast swath of western Europe and northern Africa are submerged beneath a tyrannical Aquaman's seas. The undead roam Alaska. Nazis occupy South America. Deathstoke sails the south Atlantic in documented pirate trade routes and Grodd wields an iron spoon over the ape-controled continent of Africa.

Australia remains neutral.

And just what is the H.I.V.E. Council?

Want to see what the old DCU looked like? Here's the 1990 World map from Jeff Reid's copy of the DCU Atlas

Comments

  1. The idea of pirate trade routes between Nazi occupied Brazil and Ape occupied Africa makes me want to read Flashpoint more than any of the promotional material DC has put out to date.

  2. @stupendousman you can say that again! freaking cool …

  3. “I can see Zombies from my house…You betchya!”

seriously this map sounds like it has some amazing situations in this Flashpoint-verse. Damn. I feel like i’ll be buying more of these titles that i had planned.

  4. I have the weirdest boner right now.

  5. @JNewcomb if it last for more than 4 hours, or if continual exposure to the material listed above increaases the affected area, please result a physician.

I want to know why Brazil is occupied by Nazi’s and which nazis’ are occupying it.

  6. @StupendousMan From what I’ve heard, Palmiotti is doing a pirate book in Flashpoint featuring Deathstroke.

  7. @WeaklyRoll  Boys from Brazil homage?

  8. So Britain is pretty much screwed.

  9. You’d think that damn Jeff Reid worked in a library or something.  He’s swimming in reference material.

Having been unable to read Flashpoint #1, this makes even less sense to me than it probably does to everyone else.  It alse makes me excited.

  10. Wait.  Zombies in Alaska?  Given that they should produce considerably less body heat than humans, wouldn’t they be frozen (or at least VERY slow) for the vast majority of the year?

  11. Nazis occupied my country?? DAMN THOSE NAZIS.

  12. and it looks like concentration camps are placed in whats left of Poland…geez can’t get a break? EVER!

How do you flood Western Europe without raising the sea level for the rest of the world?

  13. Wow DC is outright following Marvel’s marketing from 1995. Marvel released a similar map during Age of Apocalypse too

  14. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Not sure that Marvel owns the copyright on maps in general.

  15. @mikegraham6  –i agree -1000% cause Marvel was the first company in the history of media to show whats going on in a fictional universe with maps! #snarkiness

  16. @fuzzytypewriter No they do, but then they sold it to Columbia/Tristar which is now owned by Sony. Marvel was crazy for doing that.

  17. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@Jurassicalien  I do remember hearing that.

  18. @fuzzytypewriter i wasn’t implying they did, i was just pointing out yet another similarity between this event and AoA 😉

  19. I don’t know if everyone noticed this yet but… Metropolis still looks to be Delaware on the Flashpoint map.

  20. Why the he’ll is Coast City inland?

  21. @wally If you look at the Est coast of America, the geography is a little altered. That and Florida is a little smaller.

  22. @PraxJarvin —-hrrrrmm interesting. Its very hard to decipher on the US side. Maybe the Atlanteans just power drilled through the foundation! haha

  23. Where is Ottisburg??

  24. @Etboo  You can’t see it on the map because it’s an itty bitty place.

  25. Hmmm.

    “Africa (Ape-Controlled)”, huh?

I have some mixed feelings about that.

  26. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@Jimski  A lot of people are up in arms over this. I guess I understand. But Gorilla City has been a fixture in DCU Africa for decades.

  27. Grodd controlled may have been the better way to phrase it.

  28. I don’t get what’s bad about ape-controlled Africa… am I missing something? Grodd and Gorilla City are in Africa right?

What does slightly irks me is that Canada seems to be a desert in the DCU. Nothing ever happens in Canada in the DCU.

  29. Most Exciting Thing about Flashpoint Map:  Wheres Spain and Portugal?!

Most Exciting Thing About Jeff Reid’s Map:  What was Badhnisia?

Theses maps have been awesome all week! Thanks Jeff and Paul.

  30. @JNewcomb Let me tell you a little story about racism…

  31. @JNewcomb: It can be seen as a racial slur. I think people just like to whine. I really have a hard time believing DC purposefully is racial with this map. Africa is controlled by an Ape. Yes it is ruled by Grodd but it is controlled by an army of APES. One man can not take over a continent alone.

  32. Well actually in the DCU I guess one man/ape probably could take over a continent but in pages released you can see other apes with Grodd.

  33. @Avistann  Wow. I totally did not think of that.

  34. @Avistann Gorilla Grodd’s main weapon is his brain. And a GIANT SPOON! You do the math.

  35. Australia’s netrual… see, we want to dump America for China but we just don’t know how to break the new softly

  36. @edward  -all kinds of Irony in that especially how England is under siege. “Who’s the Prison Colony mateys?” kinda thing. =)

Ya i have to admit that the “Controlled by Apes” thing kinda struck me a bit un PC when i first heard it, knowing the history of that slur in the US. I don’t think DC would go there, but i can’t believe no one in editorial picked up on that. Controversial to say the least.

After all, apes to live in those jungles so its not totally out of whack, but still…

  37. I guess these maps really show for all the world saving antics how provincial both companies really are with their heroes for the most part. The odd Wakanda story or Knight and Squire mini aside. Glad Grant Morrison has spent time expanding the horizons of the universe with things like Final Crisis, 52 and Batman Inc.

  38. You know H.I.V.E. Council is evil because it’s using a Mercator projection.

    Oppression via semiotics.
