The Best of the Week in Panels – 12.15.2010

"I want to see her panels."
"But this is a CHRISTMAS show."
"Well, I'm sure Charles Dickens would have wanted to see her panels."
"You can barely see them panels."
"See? And these guys are REALLY looking."

Conan: Road of Kings #1

By Roy Thomas, Mike Hawthorne, John Lucas, Dave Stewart, & Richard Starkings

In case you're not following, in this panel Conan (the Barbarian) becomes the head of a band of pirates.  Also, he named the ship The Saucy Wench. Plus, I believe this is the first Best Panel honor for Roy Thomas, so he's got that going for him.

— Josh Flanagan

Brightest Day #16

By Lots of People

This is probably my favorite panel of the week. I love the dynamic sense of action and I love that it seems to be rendered in such a way as to recall a classic style a la George Perez.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Wolverine #4

By Jason Aaron, Renato Guedes, Jose Wilson Magalhaes, Oclair Albert, Matthew Wilson, & Cory Petit

Just in case, the image is not clear, this is what happens when Logan stabs Satan in the skull with his disembodied bone claws. Devil bleeds green, it seems.

— Josh Flanagan

G.I. Joe: Cobra #11

By Mike Costa, Christos Gage, Antion Fuso, Peter Dawes, & Shawn Lee

Quick! Don't let anyone at Graphic.ly see these panels!

— Conor Kilpatrick

Strange Tales II #2

By Alex Robinson and Pat Lewis

Love dicky, mullethead, college Doom. He just wanted to be invited!

— Josh Flanagan

Batman and Robin #18

By Paul Cornell, Scott McDaniel, Christopher Jones, Rob Hunter, Art Thibert, Andy Owens, Guy Major & Patrick Brosseau

Someone might want to look into Paul Cornell's thing with oversized households objects. It might help explain why he's so dementedly awesome.

  1. We talk about the statue makers and construction works of comics. I want to talk about:

    “Sack and Letterers Union”

  2. Rock, paper, scissors, combat spoon.

  3. And the sack is labeled!!

  4. The Brightest Day panel is pretty sweet. I love the coloring on those rocks, and Aquaman’s body language really suggets that this kid is knocking him on his ass despite his Big Seven strength.

Glad that Wolverine panel snuck in here. That was definitely a wicked moment.

I knew that panel from B&R would rank this week. Didn’t love the issue, and not a huge fan of McDaniel, but that was a happy WTF?! moment for me. Those scissors are pretty frightening, and that sack of girlfriend body parts is even bigger than mine.

  5. Thats a whole new level of evil that Cobra Commander has achieved. Also will we new see the rise of Office Manager Cobra Commander?

  6. @English: Yes. He’s one of the candidates to replace Michael Scott at Sabre – Scranton. Scranton will then become the new Springfield.

  7. That was a really nice issue of Brightest Day and a very good panel.  I think this will be viewed as a strong series when it’s all said and done.

  8. Any article that starts with a extended SCROOGED bit is automatically a good article.

  9. Nothing says “evil douchebag” like the jacket-turtleneck combo.

  10. IT’S LABELED!!!!!!!!

  11. My favorite ‘panel’ was the last page of Brightest Day where its just black with a figure in the center and a word balloon saying “I think we destroyed the universe”

  12. @mikeandzod21  –i loved that page as well, but for me it was ruined by the ugly lettering that was totally inappropriate for that page. Overall the lettering has been the weakest link in the visuals in this title since issue #0.

  13. That some awesome Mike Hawthorne art on Conan. Until now I just knew his “almost-Tony-Moore-but-not-quite”-style from Fear Agent. This looks better (not saying the Fear Agent stuff is bad).

  14. I love Scrooged.

  15. It looks like Middle Management Red Skull needs to hook up with the Cobra Executive Council. Their combined business skills would be unstoppable.
