The Best of the Week in Panels – 12.08.2010

Where's that panel, you silly stupid old fool? Where's that panel? Do you realize what this means? It means bankruptcy and scandal and prison. That's what it means. One of us is going to jail – well, it's not gonna be me.

Mystery Society #5

By Steve Niles, Fiona Staples, & Robbie Robbins

Here's a fact of life you should always remember: if someone is missing pupils, you don't want nothin' to do with them.  Never read Mystery Society? This is a comedy beat. The book is brilliant.

— Josh Flanagan

New Avengers #7

By Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen, Wade Von Grawbadger, Laura Martin, & Joe Caramagna

It's 26 panels for the price of one! Luke and Jessica interviewing a bunch of people to be their new nanny was my favorite sequence in a very funny issue. How strong is your Marvel-fu? Can you name all of the characters?

— Conor Kilpatrick

Thor: The Mighty Avenger #7

By Roger Langridge, Chris Samnee, Matthew Wilson, & Rus Wooton

Because they were fucking.

— Josh Flanagan

Muppet Sherlock Holmes #4

By Patrick Storck, Amy Mebberson, Braden Lamb, & Deron Bennet

I have attempted this joke in bars in Philadelphia, New York, and Delaware. I always manage to offend either a surgeon or career clown.

— Paul Montgomery

Batgirl #16

By Bryan Q. Miller, Dustin Nguyen, Derek Fridolfs, Guy Major, & Travis Lanham

I always like these panels that show the character in motion by having them appear repeatedly. It gives a great sense of action and I can almost hear Stephanie crashing through the beams of wood.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Thor: The Mighty Avenger #7

By Roger Langridge, Chris Samnee, Matthew Wilson, & Rus Wooton

You got Muppets in my Thor! You got Thor in my Muppets! And that's more than okay.

— Paul Montgomery

Comments

  1. Great panels guys. I’m not gonna lie, though. I’m really over the Bendis “Multi-Panel Interview” thing. It’s fun and great, but… he does it so often now, and in everything he does that it’s just tired anymore.

  2. …other matters…could mean anything Josh…like charades, or baking muffins or table tennis…not just hide the hammer.

  3. I gotta admit, Bendis had me with Machine Man in that sequence. Doesn’t help that the prominent artist of Nextwave is doing that series now…

Also, D-Man being extremely depressed is hilarious to me in a sick way.

  4. I love the defenders joke in that NA panel

  5. Ha that New Avengers bit is just made of YES! Especially love the little Nextwave plug! Happy with it

  6. Muppets? Thor? Excuse me while I plough through the snow to my LCS with naught but my hands to pick up this trade.

  7. It’s about time we had a Thor/Muppets crossover!! Now if we could just finally get that Flinstones/Spawn we’ve all been waiting for…

  8. Someone list the characters in the “NA” grid, please. The blonde women threw me off.

  9. The NA grid is funny, but a MASSIVE waste of Immonen’s talent.

  10. That panel of Steph falling would be so much better without the sounds written out.

  11. @JumpingJupiter  COMPLETELY disagree.

  12. That Nextwave reference was 10/10!  Thanks for pointing that out for those of us not buying that book.

  13. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

I like the idea of the NA talking heads, but I with they weren’t so one-note. Could’ve dug a little deeper.

  14. I don’t think “bust” is a sound effect. It’s certainly not onomatopoeic.

  15. Who’s that Wolverine looking character in NA panel?

  16. I agree with JJ on this one; when sounds are obviously implied (ala a gun firing etc.), I think sound effects are just repeating the comics, themselves. Especially when they’re typed and pasted on top of the art.

It’s still a stellar panel though. Makes me want to read Batgirl.

  17. @epog  D-Man.

  18. The sound effects lend rhythm to the image, where before there was none.  The sound of falling is punctuated by staccato beats, and if those weren’t there to break it up, it doesn’t have the punch it would with them.

  19. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    Well said.

  20. Haven’t read it yet, but I so hope Squirrel Girl is the nanny.

  21. Nobody able to get all the Marvel characters? I can only get about 1/3 of them.

  22. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@j206  Try it now. I added a scroll bar to the popup window.

  23. Who’s the woman in the 8th panel in the first row?  I don’t know either of the men that she’s in between either.  I’d appreciate some help.  I think I know the rest of them.

  24. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@zattaric  The woman in the 8th panel is Echo. The guy with the red headband on the end is Super Trucker U.S.

  25. Wasn;t Tygra or tiger girl pregnant?

  26. Is that NA sequence serious? We’re meant to believe all those people want a job as a nanny?

  27. @Mart  The economy is bad out there.

  28. @conor  Ha, nice one … I love the comment from Nighthawk, mind!

  29. I absolutely loved New Avengers this week!  My favorite panel was when Spider-Man raises his hand and says “Um, I didn’t get one,” in regard to the paychecks. I just love the portrayal of awkwardness and Immonen nails it.

  30. Re pro or anti sound effects, let’s take a look! 🙂

You may be right Josh… The image has lots of rhythm without the sound effects but the sound effects emphasize each visual beat.

  31. Repetition is rhythm in a visually driven medium, so there was definitely rhythm to the image already. The sound effects might’ve emphasized them, but to say there was “none” ignores the drawing itself.

  32. Thanks Josh, I wasn’t sure what was going on in that panel.

  33. I wish D-Man wasn’t the butt of jokes these days. He was awesome as Cap’s sidekick for a while, but now it seems like he just should’ve stayed dead.

  34. If there is a better job qualification than being Groot, I haven’t found one

  35. @Diabhol  I agree completely.  He was my favorite thing about that Cap run.  Great character arc, and it bugs me to watch writers whose characters don’t have arcs, because they never change, piss all over it.

  36. From left to right, top to bottom and I might not be 100% correct. Hellcat, Mantis. D-Man, Firebird, Machine Man, Sersi, Trapster, Echo, No idea who this guy is, Molly Hayes, Julia Carpenter, Ultra Girl, Groot, D-Man, Beverly Switzer, Deadpool, Sepulchre, Stature, D-Man, She-Hulk, Again I have never seen this guy in my life, Nighthawk, Sepulchre, No idea, Tigra, and of course, Squirrel Girl.

Anyone want to fill in the blanks for super hero trucker guy and Mr. Ape please do.

  37. @SirCox  He’s Super Trucker U.S.!

  38. How can anyone complain about *DOOF* it’s super great.

  39. I thought it was US ACE!

Where was Rocket Raccoon?  Actually I want him and Squirel Girl to have a night out!

  40. Wow I can not even fathom that that’s a real thing but I strangely must own every issue of it.

SUPER TRUCKER US OMNIBUS PLEASE MARVEL.

Holy shit, Jim Shooter created him too? Why am I just hearing aobut this.

  41. In case you wanted to know more about US-1/US Ace: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/linkara/at4w/2858-us-1-1

  42. Speaking of lame characters, I hope Geoff Johns brings back Prez.  If DC Universe can elect Lex Luthor for President, they can vote for a teenage boy.  Probably be better than Hawkman at least…

  43. Nextwave should only be taken in 100mg doses and never through the urethra.

Damn you fleshy ones for not buying it.

  44. Some of my favorite Captain America and Avengers stories involved D-Man.  Just sayin’….

  45. @josh: Your artsy, fartsy comments about comic books have no place here!

Maybe at newsarama, but not here! 🙂

  46. I think the guy before Tigra is from Fantastic Force.  Devo, Devlon or something like that?

  47. There were about a dozen from Avengers alone (like slump shouldered Spider-Man, or him saying ‘I’m so excited I could poop, or pissed off Wong) that should be here.

  48. I AM GROOT

(i think i have to start buying muppet comics, i actually laughed out loud at the stitches line)
