The Best of the Week in Panels – 08.22.2012

SeƱor Bond, you got big cojones. You come here, to my place, without references, carrying a piece, throwing around a lot of panels… but you should know something: nobody saw you come in, so nobody has to see you go out.

The Flash #12

By Brian Buccellato, Francis Manapul, & Wes Abbott

Okay, first, it is great to have Francis Manapul back on art duties. Second, I absolutely adore the storytelling here. Third, the change in color between the the panels does a great job of showing that we’ve moved from the normal world to The Flash’s super vibration world.

The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom #1

By Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Jordie Bellaire, & Shawn Lee

I can’t get enough shots of The Rocketeer soaring through the sky.

Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan #1

By J. Michael Straczynski, Adam Hughes, Laura Martin, & Steve Wands

Nothing mind blowing about the panel. Nothing revelatory. Nothing ground breaking. Just a simple, almost Norman Rockwell-esque memory (complete with a sepia toned background) by one of the best artists in comics who doesn’t do interiors anymore.

Secret Avengers #30

By Rick Remender, Matteo Scalera, Matthew Wilson, & Clayton Cowles

Having the middle panel–where the action kicks off–turn black and white and more stylized was something completely unexpected and completely awesome.

Batman, Incorporated #3

By Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham, Nathan Fairbairn, & Patrick Brosseau

It was so good to see Matches Malone. He’s one of my favorite weapons in Batman’s arsenal.

Planetoid #3

By Ken Garing

I was struck by the elegant simplicity of this moment.

Batman: The Dark Knight #12

By Gregg Hurwitz, David Finch, Sonia Oback, & Carlos M. Mangual

I like how the light got tighter as the panels progressed. It really heightens the emotional impact.

Scalped #60

By Jason Aaron, R.M. Guera, Giulia Brusco, & Mark Doyle

That’s about as perfect a final page as I can imagine for this series.

Comments

  1. Thank you for putting up the Spoiler Block for Scalped

  2. Did Barry bring the cast of Lost with him from the Flashpoint universe?

  3. Great picks this week. That Hawkeye panel is pretty stellar.

  4. That panel from Planetoid is great. I’ve said this about other panels before, but it would make a great large canvas print. The moment is perfectly captured with him against that empty sky, like he’s searching for what to say in a future that’s not exactly what he had planned. Really digging the series.

  5. haha am i the only one dumb enough to think that the last image was actually the printed page in a comic book???

  6. I know it’s a spoiler, but what is the significance of the final image of Scalped? Not sure why it is a spoiler.

Not sure if I had a best panel in the two books I bought. There were a lot of great artwork with Moritat, Kolins, and Torres but I can’t think of one image that stands out.

  7. I really liked the Batman Incorporated panel that shows all the bad guys from the Morrison run, with lines showing their connections, and with Talia in the middle. It wasn’t as artsy as the other panels here, but as a dork, it was satisfying.

  8. Really like that Dr. Manhattan panel.
