The Best of the Week in Panels – 06.15.2011

Panels are a wish your heart makes.

Power Girl #25

By Judd Winick, Hendry Prasetya, Jessica Kholinne, & Travis Lanham

The final page of Judd Winick's run on Power Girl was so perfect that I'm probably going to leave the book with him.

Uncanny X-Men #538

By Kieron Gillen, Terry Dodson, Rachel Dodson, Justin Ponsor, & Jow Caramagna

The sweetest moment of the week.

Flashpoint: Grodd of War #1

By Sean Ryan, Ig Guara, Ruy Jose, Stefani Rennee, & Carlos M. Mangual

Depressed, sarcastic, and suicidal Gorilla Grodd is our new favorite character.

Alpha Flight #1

By Greg Pak, Fred Van Lente, Dale Eaglesham, Andrew Hennessy, Sonia Oback, & Simon Bowland

This is the kind of dynamic double page spread that I have come to expect from Eaglesham.

Justice League: Subway – Fast Friends #1

By B. Clay Moore, Sergio Sandoval, Santi Casas, Jorge Gonzalez, & Wes Abbott

If that sandwich has bacon then Black Manta totally has his priorities straight.

Invincible #80

By Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Nikos Koutsis, MIke Toris, & Rus Wooten

When Robert Kirkman saw that this issue was going to hit the stands shortly after the big DC announcement he must have thought, "Jackpot!"

Comments

  1. This is why Black Manta is the best Supervillain.

  2. He was my favorite part of Brightest Day, I hope the feature him a lot in the new Aquaman ongoing.

  3. You’re darn right you are, PG.

  4. Subway! i like this campaign better than Jared.

  5. if i could i would make that subway ad my pick of the week based on funnyness

  6. ‘I gift you terror!’  That is such an awesome line.

I am not sure if Grodd is suicidal.  I read it as his character was looking for that next ‘fix’ of action or challenge.  More like a junkie trying to ‘chase the dragon’ of danger and excitement and conquest.  But in either case, I want this to be so much more than a one-shot.

  7. Damn straight, Power Girl.

I really like the art and dynamo of that Alpha Flight spread but for some reason the perspective seems weird to me…it seems like everyone’s a giant. I haven’t read the issue but I can understand the big baddie being a giant (if he is a giant), but are the minions huge too?

Great panels as usual. Black Manta should’ve gotten Seafood Sensation.

  8. I think Grodd is a good example of ennui.  He is bored to the point of self destruction.  I really enjoyed his one shot and agree that it should be more than just that.

  9. Little disappointed that Batman punching that Guy and him puking didn’t make it.

  10. If you read the whole Subway ad, you’ll notice that Black Manta took that sandwich from Michael Strahan’s crotch.

    Not kidding.

  11. Grodd scared the crap out of me and made me smile at the same time.

  12. Ok, a little off topic, but when did PG’s boob-window become rectangular?  Don’t get me wrong, I have always been a fan of letter-boxing.  I’m just surprised, is all.

  13. Invincible keeps finding ways to amuse me after 80 issues… 🙂

  14. Hey, maybe Black Manta is really Big Mike from Chuck?

  15. That clerk is wearing a Nonplayer shirt. Which is cool. Now if we could just get that second issue of it.

  16. I love that the omnibus in that Invincible panel has a giant bus on the cover.

  17. @IroncladMerc  Nice.

  18. Invincible #80

Part of me wants to post Diamond Distributor Stats and the lack of stellar performances by both Image and Invincible directly when compared to #1 issues by DC and Marvel

and the other Part says Heck Ya!!!

  19. Thank you Kirkman; somebody gets it.

  20. “I GIFT YOU TERROR!” is going to be my new catch phrase

  21. Did I miss it or is Powergirl missing from the DC relaunch ???  Now thats depressing 🙁

  22. AAARRGGGHHH! The Subway advertisement is as annoying as the Super 8 insert. C’mon DC>

  23. This is one of my favorite features. You guys are great. Also good research finding that subway comic!

  24. While I agree with kirkman, give dc some credit. Don’t be a prick. That’s how you keep readers.

  25. He’s not being a prick. He’s having fun, he took a jab at himself too in the same page and I believe at Marvel. He knows most of the guys at Marvel and DC, they all take potshots at each other and they all get along for the most part. Stan Lee practically invented teasing the competition and Quesada and others perfected it, ribbing each other is healthy.

Not sure when everyone got so touchy.

  26. My question is how did Black Manta keep the sandwich from getting soggy? CONTINUITY, PEOPLE!

  27. This just in, Invincible to be written & drawn by Todd MacFarlane, renumbered with a -1 issue starting over.

  28. “Potshot!”  I don’t enjoy his comics, but I love Kirkman’s rants and Ifanboy interviews.  Please, make another rant.  Debate Johns and Lee!

  29. I just lol’ed so hard at the Subway one.

  30. So, keeping up consistent numbering is a matter of integrity now? Is it because starting with a new #1 is like a “Holocaust on History/Large Numbers”? Well, there you have it, Robert Kirkman says Geoff Johns is as bad as Hitler. (Jim Lee is probably Himmler… DiDio is almost certainly Otto von Bismarck. Go ahead. Look him up on wikipedia. Tell me I’m wrong.)

  31. Dude it’s a character in a comic book that will never be seen again saying that. Bringing up Hitler is so far past crazy town it’d be faster to keep walking straight ahead to get back to crazy town again.

  32. @ctrosejr  Amanda Conner altered the window when she began drawing Peege, so, say two years?

The Grodd comic put the ‘gore’ into Gorilla, and not in a good way.

  33. @Mart: Damn, you’re right!  I have been reading PG all this time and never noticed!  I don’t know what that says about me.  In my defense, Amanda Conner never drew straight lines in that area.  The rectangle always “bowed” quite a bit.

  34. I LOVE BLACK MANATA!

I am so glad that you guys scored the Black Manata sandwich panel.  BEST THING I HAVE READ IN AN AD EVER.  I was literaly coughing up coffee as I read that.  I want a tshirt.
