The Best of the Week in Panels – 05.18.2011

Here come the panels. It's all right.

Avengers #13

By Brian Michael Bendis, Chris Bachalo, One of Possibly Four Inkers, & Clayton Cowles

Well, he does have a really big hammer.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Teen Titans #95

By J.T. Krul, Nicola Scott, Doug Hazelwood, Jason Wright, Carlos M. Mangual, & Scott Hazlewood

This was the panel that creeped me out the most this week. There's just not enough mouthwash in the world to recitfy this aftertaste situation.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Avengers Academy #14

By Christos Gage, Sean Chen, Scott Hanna, Jeromy Cox, & Joe Caramanga

If for no other reason, Reptil exists for this singular moment. This is why I've already pre-ordered Rhino's upcoming memoir The Agony and the Ivory.

— Paul Montgomery

Zatanna #13

By Paul Dini, Jamal Igle, Jon Sibal, John Kalisz, & Pat Brosseau

Generally speaking, when a black cat with one giant oversized eye projects a giant image of The Spectre pointing at you with a comically oversized finger, you're in for a doozy of a day.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Amazing Spider-Man #661

By Christos Gage, Reilly Brown, Victor Olazaba, John Rauch, & Joe Caramagna

I think the world is ready for George Henderson, Superhero Financial Planner. Coming to you this fall from Marvel Comics.

— Conor Kilpatrick

The Rocketeer Adventures #1

By John Cassaday, Laura Martin, & Chris Mowry

Simple and evocative. It's great to see John Cassaday doing some interior work again.

— Conor Kilpatrick

  1. Looks like I’ll have to go back and pick up Avengers, just for that scene!      Loved the Zatanna and Spiderman images when I saw them…  but the Titans shot is really stellar.   Clear sign that I was reading that story too fast, that I apparently skimmed right over it the first time.

  2. Nice to see the Avengers Academy gang in the spotlight.

  3. The Spectre looks like the Evil Monkey from Family Guy there.

  4. Lol at the spider man panel, i wish they would put christos gage on some higher profile books, he’s just great

  5. Good to see Cassaday can still bring it. Some of his recent covers had me worried, but this is great.

  6. @Bendrix  Agreed.  When you compare this to the covers for Superman, you gotta wonder if DC is going to hire him again.  But then again, his covers for Marvel were not markedly better.

  7. They must have paid john cassady a lot of money to do it and or he wanted to do it

  8. Sometimes a hammer is just a hammer.

Also, my LCBS didn’t get ANY Rocketeers. Supposedly tomorrow. Man, that is a beautiful panel. I can’t wait for that book!

  9. @cubsmodano  That’s exactly what I was thinking.  I’d really like to see Avengers Academy pull’s increase on iFanboy.

  10. Great Avengers Academy moment. That one panel beat and the air quotes are brilliant.

  11. That Spider-Man one is hilarious.

  12. I’ve been considering jumping on amazing spider-man – is the current issue (661) a good juping on point? Also have you done a Where do I start Spider-man feature yet?

  13. @GloriousGodfrey  you can jump back a few weeks to when Johnny died and spider-man joins fantastic four. better yet, goto 654.1 and start from there i suppose. ive become a fan of dan slott

  14. Damn but Sean Chen draws fantastic-looking dinosaurs.

  15. The Rocketeer one is great, you really get the sense of height from that.

  16. I know it wasn’t included, but the last panel of Ultimate Spider-Man gave me chills, made me feel worried and proud, and left me remembering what makes USM one of the best heroes around.

  17. That stuff with Spider-Man was something I really didn’t like. Cage is pointing out the obvious but he’s also making Pete look like a real fucking idiot. Also, wasn’t Parker a teacher? Oh wait that was retconned out….

In Herc #3 there was a great moment with Man-Bull saying he loved Basil….IN A PALTONIC WAY!

  18. @TheNextChampion  Peter being a teacher wasn’t retconned out. It was, in fact, a major plot point in that issue. (I don’t think you actually read the issue.)

  19. So would Middle Management Red Skull be the sidekick or the Nemisis of George Henderson, Superhero Financial Planner?

  20. I loved when Zatanna called him a “cosmic douche”.

  21. Fyi Rhino Horn is made of Keratin not Ivory, sorry my pedantry got the better of me

  22. @EddyDisaster While #654.1 is a great, fun issue, it’s not about Spider-Man at all and is continued in Venom #1. So it might not really be the best jumping-on point for ASM.
