The Best of the Week in Covers – 07.20.2011

Covers, covers everywhere, but not a drop to drink.

Zatanna #15

Cover by Adam Hughes

Hughes is doing some of the best work of his career on these Zatanna covers, and this relatively simple pinup is easily my favorite of the bunch. The dramatic lighting is just so eye-catching, and the way Z's arms are concealed within the shadows, creating the illusion of disembodied white-gloved hands, makes for the perfect magic poster.

DMZ #67

Cover by John Paul Leon

A moments peace which would almost function as a postcard were the landscape not marred by civil war. I love the subtlety of the damage done here. The color is just as wonderful, with the distant bridge almost washed out in the dawny glow.

Daredevil #1

Cover by Paolo Rivera

A simple pinup is elevated to spectacular heights with a beige city soundscape rendered entirely through words. A pigeon composed of "flaps." A water tower churning with "Glugs" and "Shoshes." It's just a hint at the two stories inside, so inventive in their depiction of Daredevil's unique perspective on the world around him.

Power Girl #26

Cover by Sami Basri

A great showcase for Basri's talents in that each of these look-alikes features her own unique look, pose, and expression.

Comments

  1. I’ve seen that Daredevil image a dozen times, but this was the first time I noticed all the sound effects. Such a great idea!

  2. The DD cover is a great concept and very well rendered, I must say however that something about the way the eyes are covered really bothers me. It looks wrong for some reason.

    Great choices!

  3. Lots of good selections this week. Daredevil was really cool especially with all the sound effects.

i love the Zatanna cover and really each one is always so good. On this particular one, the simple idea of moving the masthead away from that top area and integrating it with the art really creates something interesting. Its always funny to see 99.999% of comic mastheads live in that upper area “newsstand friendly” zone even though they haven’ been sold that way in decades.

  4. @JNewcomb  It kind of makes Daredevil look like Cyclops.

  5. Those Zatanna covers have been amazing.

  6. @lifesend  Cyclops isn’t allwed to smile.

  7. Why isn’t Marvel’s Blank covers ever on the Best of the week?

  8. The Zatanna cover IS really good.

  9. I’m surprised the Hellblazer cover didn’t make the cut.  It was excellent.  That Daredevil cover should be a poster.  It’s so perfect.

  10. DD has a grin like a game show host it’s very offputing

  11. @RobotZombie  Not even in bed with Emma?  So, so sad.

  12. Love the Zatanna cover.  Gonna miss her…
