Super Bowl ‘Iron Man’ Spot

Does this, or does this not look like Tony Stark?

If you haven’t watched the new Iron Man ad that aired during the Super Bowl, go now!
OK, I’m excited for this one. There’s so much potential for a fun movie here! Note my non-cynical tone, and general positivity. That doesn’t happen often. I saw this one quick shot of Downey in the suit with no helmet, and in the midst of battle, and I just saw Tony.

I know I’m not the only one who’s excited about this. What do you think?

Comments

  1. First post woot! (Been listening to the Panelologists)

And I agree, super-psyched it was friggin awesome. Seems like they found legitimate ways to work in several different styles of the suit without being retarded (yes, I’m refering to the animated movie).

  2. i agree josh, i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again, i think i might be a little more excited for Iron Man than i am for The Dark Knight…

  3. This trailer was even better than the first!
Got some of the first real footage of the armor when NOT in flight, some more of the Tony Stark attitude that Downey really nailed, and even some Iron Monger!
One thing that I was looking for in the movie was that the suit didn’t fly like a jet and move like Robocop, but from what I’ve seen, it looks like armor movement is fluid. CAN”T WAIT FOR IT!!

  4. The subject of this movie has reduced me to incoherent variations on the word “awesome,” pretty much since I saw Downey sporting a goatee at the Oscars, about this time last year.

So — yes. Excited for the movie. Moreso than “The Dark Knight,” even, because I’ve seen a Batman movie before. I’ve even seen GOOD Batman movies before. But this is something new.

Also, I’m glad the trailer is awesome, because I’ve discovered that actually trying to explain Iron Man to people who aren’t into comics just gets you funny looks. But these trailers are doing such a good job at introducing the premise/ selling the movie, that explanation isn’t really necessary.

  5. Remember when he shot the tank?! Awesome!

  6. This movie is looking pretty spectacular. I just hope it’s not the Tony we’ve been seeing in the current Marvel status.

I tried explaining the character to a girl last night, and I had a really hard time making him sound interesting.

“Oh, his origin is he’s a billionaire industrialist who gets captured in vietnam, and has shrapnel near his heart so he builds a suit to keep himself alive and escape.”

“Huh, cool. So what’s he do now? What’s his thing?”

    “um..well, he..now…S.H.I.E.L.D….um..
douchenozzle.. Civil War… well, the movie will be cool, trust me!”

so yeah. what’s there to LIKE about IRON MAN the character?

  7. Definitely looking forward to this. I think if Downey downplays the snarkiness which he is prone to, it’ll be great. More Spider-Man than Ghost Rider.

  8. JD — i’m not sure what you’re point is about iron man. he’s probably the MOST interesting character in comics right now.

  9. “I tried explaining the character to a girl last night, and I had a really hard time making him sound interesting.”

Like I said above, pointing to the trailer is probably the best way to go. Though if I’m pressed, I go with ‘The Aviator-meets-Batman.'”

  10. More like the Aviator meets Batman meets Leaving Las Vegas.

  11. Non comic book people at the Superbowl Party I went to had no idea who Iron Man was and were relatively unimpressed by the commercial. For the first time, I was worried for this movie.

  12. Wow, that was pretty cool!

  13. “More like the Aviator meets Batman meets Leaving Las Vegas”

    . . .Well, that’ll be the sequel.

  14. awesome. robert downey jr. was a great pick and i think this movie will be iron-tastic! (goes and cries alone in car)

  15. Yep, that’s all kinds of awesome! Downey looks great in this. Although…

LOVE the practical suit stuff, and most of the CG looks solid too… apart from that last shot of him walking away from the tank. It’s probably just early CG though, so not too worried.

I’m completely there on opening day!

  16. This will probably be one of those drive-to-a-big-theater-camp-outside-until-midnight-then-be-the-first-to-tell-my-friends-in-work-about-it-the-next-day deal. Kinda like the Star Wars prequels. Except good…

  17. With every new trailer and picture I see I am more excited for this movie.

  18. this movie looks AMAZING. Everyone in my dorm who saw it (close to 40 people I’d imagine) wants to see it too, and only two of us actually read comics.

  19. Haven’t seen it but I am certain this could be one of my top movies in the genre. Not the best, but one closest to my preferences in tone and characterization. Yes, there is man-love for RDJ. He’s just like me, except for the billions and Iron suit, I’m him! Sure, some additional women throwing themselves at my feet would be nice but, bah.

  20. Yeah, I can fly.

    F*cking perfect.

  21. And big points for Audioslave on the soundtrack.

  22. (off-topic for Conor): Why no love for Smallville last week dude? Marc McClure!!!

  23. (off-topic for Conor): Why no love for Smallville last week dude? Marc McClure!!!

Chalk it up to the TV strike throwing my radar off. My bad.

  24. I have a harder, and harder time peeling the smile off my face with each new trailer they release for this flick.

  25. Downey is perfect!

Dark Knight will still be better, Marvel *deleted slur*

  26. I love the cg shot when he shoots the tank. The lighting and atmosphere look amazing. Next level stuff.

  27. “Also, I’m glad the trailer is awesome, because I’ve discovered that actually trying to explain Iron Man…”

Any time I ask I activate my dancer-signal (hidden in a wrist watch), and break into choreography and song in the street.

Tony Stark makes you feel, he’s a cool exec with a heart of steel!
*baratone back-ups* As Iron Man all jets aflame, he fights and smites with repulsor rays!

Then it sort of devolves into a West Side Story battle between the male and female dancers as the exchange “Amazing Armor” for “That’s Iron Man.”

Yeah… Maybe just go with the trailer and the dropping of “establishment” and “hates commies” as buzz words.

  28. “Any time I ask I activate my dancer-signal . . . [musical revue version of Iron Man deleted]”

The thing is, you know, Tony Stark would be all about that. Especially if a lot of showgirls were involved.

  29. The trailer looks great, but I find myself a little hesistant. Need we look back at what’s come before to sober the excitement (Daredevil, anyone? Or the ultimate insult to viewing pleasure The Punisher?). But there’s always the hope the first XMEN brought us…

TDK is going to be better.

Anyone have an idea of what the percentage of good to bad Marvel movies is? I know this is extremely subjective, but surely we can reach some sort of statistic.

  30. Iron Man is Bruce Wayne without the Batman and engineering skills in place of detective skills. That’s how you explain who Iron Man is.

  31. The trailer looks great, but I find myself a little hesistant. Need we look back at what’s come before to sober the excitement (Daredevil, anyone? Or the ultimate insult to viewing pleasure The Punisher?). But there’s always the hope the first XMEN brought us…

I think most people can tell by the trailers and the buzz around a movie whether they will be any good or not.

I don’k think there’s been a Marvel movie I was fooled on. If anything, I thought the bad ones were going to be worse than they were. My crap radar isn’t going off on this one, but I could be wrong.

  32. Or the ultimate insult to viewing pleasure The Punisher

    I really liked The Punisher.

I think that the cast and Jon Favreau have enough of a pedigree that I’d be shocked if it were bad.

  33. Tend to agree with Josh. Most shitty Marvel films have looked shitty to me from the trailers (Ghost Rider & Elektra being prime examples). Although I also must admit to liking The Punisher movie.

Nope, nothing to worry about with Iron Man, it all looks gravy! With this and TDK, we might be spoiled in ’08.

  34. As I said via Twitter the moment the trailer ended, this looks freaking awesome. I’m with a lot of people about being more excited about this than Dark Knight. I think it has a lot to do with the ‘already seen it’ aspect, and the fact I *know* Dark Knight will be good.

When he fired the missile into the tank, the fanboy in me went supernova.

  35. “The thing is, you know, Tony Stark would be all about that. Especially if a lot of showgirls were involved.”
    Wait, showgirls?…

“Anyone have an idea of what the percentage of good to bad Marvel movies is?”
If you ask me, Ghost Rider is the only real disappointment. That’s just a massive cock-up as a movie, let alone as a licensed property.
In ten years I think a lot of people will have finally watched The Punisher, the Blades, Elektra, and other films on TV, and come around to them. They all have redeeming qualities. Even Fantastic Four… Sort of…

I’m surprised about reaction to the Elektra trailer.
As a video game plot in a US martial arts movie, I think it’s a decent enough flick. The trailer, to me, really did well to show off some of the great visual direction of the film.
The undwinding climax of the successive ‘boss’ battles is not only a lot of fun, but it also has some of the best use of colour in a superhero film.

On a visual theme; part of me longs for the widescreen slick of that long rumored Michael Bay Iron Man.
I don’t doubt sacrificing that for character and story will be well worth it, but as cool as the trailers have been… They maybe aren’t as slick and aloof as I thought an IM movie might be.

I’m definitely in. Not quite Dark Knight-in, but I’m in!

  36. Mike, with you buddy. I’ll be there opening day. It looks great.

But for TDK, it looks great, and I’ll be there opening day and for several screenings after.

The first incarnation of Iron Man is being brought to the screen. I’m there, I’ll see that! Opening night!

The incarnation of the ‘proper’ Batman and potentially the ‘real Joker’ is on the way.

Just my take… I’m seeing both, opening night!

    Can’t wait!

  37. Whoa. Seems I may have stepped on some toes.

Conor – Punisher? Really? Well, now that I think of it, I liked the “family” created by the weird neighbors. I think what killed it for me was Travolta. Usually I’m okay w/ him just playing different variations of himself, but this one just hit me wrong.

Josh – the trailer is amazing and Downey is a great pick. But trailers can be so deceptive. I was stoked about XMen 3…

Mike – Batman set the standard really high for me. Overall I enjoy Marvels flicks, but often feel they lack some depth. I’m sure transferring years of back story to 2 hours on screen can be a little daunting. Yet it seems that with such a great staff of writers, editors, and visual artists, they could churn out some truly stunning work.

No matter what, I’ll tune into ifanboy.com for the review. I’ve unabashedly stolen Josh’s “motivational yelling” line from the 300 review. It works in so many contexts…

  38. Conor – Punisher? Really? Well, now that I think of it, I liked the “family” created by the weird neighbors. I think what killed it for me was Travolta. Usually I’m okay w/ him just playing different variations of himself, but this one just hit me wrong.

Yeah, Travolta was over-the-top (but so was Jack Nicholson in Batman) and setting it in Tampa was a horrible mistake, but Thomas Jane WAS The Punisher. He nailed it. And the neighbor stuff was good. I found it really enjoyable about 80% of the time.

  39. “Thomas Jane WAS The Punisher. He nailed it.”

    Amen to that!

  40. “I’m sure transferring years of back story to 2 hours on screen can be a little daunting. Yet it seems that with such a great staff of writers, editors, and visual artists, they could churn out some truly stunning work.”
That’s probably fair, and a worthy criticism, but I don’t know if dwelling on that is fair to the films. In their own rights, I think with the exception of maybe Ghost Rider, they’ve all had something there for a film goer.

When Punisher hit DVD I have to admit I watched the shit out of it, because, for my money, it had to be one of the densest stories these movies had seen until maybe Batman Begins.

I think if you’re willing to swallow a lighter tone than your typical Punisher story, it’s a pretty non-stop and variety packed couple of hours, with no real lulls. I’m not crazy about the Ennis ‘block o nuts’, but there’s a lot in that movie in the positive sense. As opposed to X-Men 3 or Daredevil, that probably tried to cram too much in.

Which, just to bring it all back, doesn’t sound like a problem Iron Man will have. It sounds like there’s been a great attention to adaptation and potential franchising from Favreau, who’s said to be a preexisting IM fan.
It might just be me, but I think using Iron Monger, which actually looks plausible, is a really surprising way to lead, but also creates an economy of a real wealth of characters and story to feature in sequels.

    It’s looking promising!

  41. Thomas Jane? I was thining of Dolf Lundgren, Ha!
