Spielberg Bringing LOCKE AND KEY to TV?

New York Magazine's Vulture blog reports that IDW's Locke & Key series is likely heading to television. The writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Transformers, Star Trek, Fringe) has been rumored to be attached since as early as February, when the project was listed as a potential feature length film. Now Steven Spielberg (Joe Versus the Volcano, Balto) and DreamWorks Television are involved along with writer/producer Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, War of the Worlds). Given Kurtzman and Orci's deal with 20th Century Fox, we can probably expect to see Locke & Key on Fox or FX. Personally, I'm a little disappointed it's not AMC, HBO, or Showtime, but given the quality of the source material and the caliber of the producers involved, we're looking at some true event television in the making.

As a fan of both Locke & Key and television, I'm pretty stoked.

It's pretty wise to adapt Locke & Key for television rather than shoe-horning it into the confines of a feature film. Even at the halfway point, the comics series would prove dauntingly full, necessitating major cuts. You could risk investing in a new film franchise, bringing each arc to the big screen, but that just doesn't seem appropriate for this particular story. And again, risk. No, TV seems the clear choice. If the early buzz for AMC's The Walking Dead is any indication, it seems like the landscape is pretty eager for this kind of thing. These days horror and supernatural stories also seem to be a pretty big draw, and with author Joe Hill's novels Horns and Heart Shaped Box headed to theaters, all the pieces are coming together. Perfect storm.

I will most likely be watching the bejesus out of this. One suggestion to the producers? Brie Larson (Scott Pilgrim, The United States of Tara) as Kinsey. Just sayin'.

  1. =o!!!!!!!!!

  2. Fuck to the yes!!! This is awesome news. I’m more psyched about this then the Walking Dead.  I’m not worried at all about this being on FX or Fox. The creative team sounds good and I’ve loved FX’s recent programs like Sons of Anarchy and Justified.

  3. What Mangaman said!

  4. So much potential…

I love that these robust worlds (Walking Dead, Locke & Key, Fables [rumored]) are being tapped for television.  They are perfectly suited for ongoing story lines with discrete arcs (seasons).  They feel genuinely new and unique, unlike 90% of what’s out there.

  5. Chris Neseman just had an orgasm.

  8. Ick.

  9. Has that Spielberg’s guy done anything other than Joe Versus The Volcano and Balto?

    "I know!"

    "Roll call. What’re you drinking?"

    "Oh, just some Sierra Mist."

"400 year old whiskey from a pirate ship. It’s supposedly haunted."

    "Cool!"

  11. The first arc is exceptionally gritty and disturbing.  I’m not sure that Fox or FX will be able to make it graphic enough to sell it to me.  Nonetheless, I’m definitely amped about the potential.

  12. YES! My favourite comic!

  13. Dang.  That is some awesome news.

  14. I’ve always tried to read this series but it could never click with me. Maybe a tv series will make it finally work for me.
