Soundtrack to ‘Scott Pilgrim’

You’ve heard us go ga-ga on the podcast about Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 4, so hopefully you’ve ran out and bought a copy of it.

So you may be wondering, “What should I listen to while I read this great new comic book?” Well, we have the answer for you. Check out “Predicts the Future” by Plumtree, an obscure Canadian band who’s 1997 album features the song, “Scott Pilgrim.”

I saw this song pop up on a music blog and scratched my head, wondering if some band was inspired by the comic book. But turns out it, its the other way around. Bryan Lee O’Malley explains back in 2004:

“All my comics seem to be inspired directly by music, which is hard to explain. Scott Pilgrim is named after a song by one of my favorite obscure Canadian bands of the 90’s, Plumtree”

Comments

  1. Did anyone else immediately notice that the guy on the cover of Scott Pilgrim is making the same pose/facial expression as Captain Marvel over at the pick of the week?

  2. Well, Captain Marvel is ostensibly “getting it together” as well.

  3. Plumtree was an awesome little band and that is a great album. If memory serves they were the last great hope for the Halifax/Eastern Canada scene but never really caught on. Shortly thereafter a lot of the bigger bands from that era/scene started to break up(The Inbreds, Thrush Hermit, Local Rabbit, etc) and the hype about Halifax started to subside. That whole sound was way ahead of it’s time. I really miss those days.

  4. So you guys have sold me on this thing. Well, iFanboy and Around Comics talking about Scott Pilgrim on last Thursday’s show has convinced me to check this out. I am going to click right over the library website and see what trades they have. Thanks guys.

  5. Okay, I saw that Conor had this on his pull list, so I went out and bought the first issue/trade on Wednesday. What a fun read! I’m totally hooked!

  6. I think I may have missed the podcast about this book. But everyone seems to have been turned, so I trust it’s good. Question: with xmas coming up I can only afford 1 more trade before I start buying prezzies; Should I buy Scott Pilgrim or The Exterminators?

  7. I think I may have missed the podcast about this book.

We spend a lot of time on it on this week’s Pick of the Week show.

  8. What I want to know is, what do “The Clash at Demonhead” sound like?

I imagine something like a cross between the New Pornagraphers and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs…

  9. Eyun – I love both trades but Scott Pilgrim would be my choice because it’s a different kind of comic experience and certainly lighter in feel heading into the holidays.

But if the holidays mean a grimy view of an impending bug doom for the world, go for Exterminators.

  10. Cheers Tad, looks like Scott Pilgrim it is. I’ll be sure to check out Exterminators too though once the holiday madness dies down.

  11. I LOVE THIS PODCAST!!!!!! Thank you so much for recommending Scott Pilgrim so highly. Just bought the first volume yesterday. Finished it today. LLOL LLOL. I haven’t so thoroughly enjoyed a comic like this in a looooong time. I can’t wait to get the other 3 volumes. Once again. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

  12. I picked up the first trade today on a whim, and man is it just a lot of fun. The fight at the end of it just comes from nowhere, but seemingly fits right into the story.

I had a blast reading it and just ordered volumes two and three. I’m definitely picking this one up for my sister for the holidays.

  13. I did the same thing. After listening to the guys rave about Scott Pilgrim again i went and picked up all 4 at my local store and have zipped through Volumes 1 and 2. There so much i already love about this im sad ive only got 2 books left to go. Damn you Ifanboy for making me love yet another thing i didnt spend money on before i listened to you!
    Ps. I still love you

  14. So I downloaded the Plumtree album off of iTunes and it is a lot of fun. The style of the music fits the energy and style of the book perfectly.
