Relief Efforts for Japanese Catastrophe

When you write a column focusing on the business aspects of an industry, you can sometimes lose sight of the innate good natured leanings of so many people around you.  The ongoing catastrophe in Japan has led to an outpouring of charitable efforts in support of the very difficult times that lie ahead, and it’s served as a reminder of how awesomely powerful we as a society can be when our efforts are directed at a unified purpose.

All across the world, efforts are being made in support of Japan, and the comics’ community is no different.  I’m not going to preach to anyone about giving, that’s ultimately a very personal decision. But if you’re inclined to help, here are some of the comic-book related ways you can do so:

eBay Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Relief
eBay has a platform set up to easily buy or list goods and services in support of the relief efforts.  You can sort by non-profit (for example, American Red Cross), or by any keyword or category that suits your leanings.  There is a wealth of comic book, video game and art-related listings posted; with more cropping up each day.  I really love that the listings show the % of the winning bid that will go directly to charity (I prefer to focus on the 100% of proceeds listings myself).

Adam Hughes at C2E2
Adam Hughes, one of the most sought after convention sketch and commission artists, has agreed to do head sketches for anyone that donates at least $5 to his Japan relief jar at C2E2 this week. This is, without question, an amazing deal.

Thematic Prints & Posters
ComicsAlliance has a great thread going on where they are posting auctions and listings as they’re made aware of them. A number of artists have created prints where all proceeds will go to the relief efforts:

  • James Jean OVM Lotus War scarf – Famed comics cover artist turned fine artist and fashion maven James Jean is donating all the proceeds from his OVM conceived Japan-themed scarf to the relief efforts
  • Joshua Smith of Hydro74 with a Japanese Salvation Army themed tee for $20
  • Threadless Japan and Pacific Rim T-shirt Challenge – Geeks love t-shirts and Threadless is a long-standing collaborator with comic artists. The company is running a design contest now where the winners shirts will go directly to support relief efforts

We Heart Japan Charity Art Event
Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles is organizing an event for Friday, March 17th where 100% of the proceeds go to the Japanese earthquake victims.  There will be appearances by a wealth of notable anime creators and other special guests.

Kodansha Dojinshi (Self Published) Charity Art book
35+ manga creators are collaborating on a publication to benefit the relief efforts. The Anime News Network has details here

We will continue to update this thread as we find more listings.  By all means, if you know of any related initiatives that aren't yet listed, please let me know in the comments, or via email, or on Twitter.
