PREVIEW: Secret Avengers #11 Goes Into Captain America’s Past

Later this month, Marvel Comics heads back to the past in the pages of Secret Avengers #11 to reveal a bit more about both Captain America and his former friend and ally, now captured enemy, John Steele.  Written by Ed Brubaker with art by WIll Conrad (with a cover by Mike Deodato to the right), this issue promises to head back in time to see both how John Steele was the world's first super soldier as well as how he was turned into an agent for the Shadow Council.

What's even more interesting about this preview is the preview pages Marvel has provided us to take a look at.  Clearly you can see that this Word War II period story features Captain America in a uniform that continues to evolve into looking like the Captain America that we've had glimpses of from the upcoming movie.  I don't blame Marvel for doing this at all, but I just find it interesting that they've coordinated to this level and artwork in out in the wild a good 4 to 5 months before the movie is even released.  That's what they call, synergy.

Secret Avengers #11 ships on March 30, 2011 and is $3.99

  1. So far Secret Avengers has felt like Steve Rogers and Friends. I was quite excited to read this book as it had some characters i wanted to follow (beast and Valkryie) and some interesting dynamics with guys like Moon Knight and Nova being on the team. So far though we haven’t been getting a lot of these other characters, which is a shame because there is some great potential. Thiss looks interesting, but more Steve and less secret avengers might make me go somewhere else.

  2. If Brubaker keeps the Prince of Orphans in the book, I will keep buying it.

  3. @CloudControl  ed brubaker is gone after issue 12 nick spencer is taking over and im droping the title goodbye secrect avengers

  4. @WeaklyRoll  well goodbye secrect avengers!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Awesome!  I’m looking forward to reading more about John Steele.  I liked him in The Marvels Project, so I’m excited to read more about how he turned into a villain.

  6. Between this title and the Cap proper title, Bru got to focus on both Caps.

  7. Secret Avengers has become one of my favorite team books–2nd only to Uncanny X-Force (and only because of that titles superior art) I think that, aside from a few of the issues in the first arc, this title has been great fun. Loving all this Shadow Council buildup. Really hope Spencer builds upon what Bru is doing with the title.

  8. @Jdudley – I agree!  I think this last arc with Shang-Chi was WAY better than the first arc.

  9. Synergy doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good thing,Ron. I’m getting more and more annoyed that the source material is the one grabbing it’s ankles for the movies. It truly should be the other way around. Other than the look & powers of Blade, I have yet to see a character change that betters the comics.

  10. @Jig  he didn’t say it was a good thing sourpatch, he just said it was synergy

  11. This title has gone from strength to strength, definitely keeping on my pull list.

  12. I definitely like the book and will stay on after the handoff. I don’t think Nick Spencer is a bad choice myself.

  13. Man Will Conrad looks a lot like Deodato Jr. Glad to see the style of the comic is sorta staying the same for this.

Shame this is the last issue though for Brubaker.

  14. Just as Secret Warriors is really the Nick Fury book, Secret Avengers has been THE Steve Rogers book, with the exception of the Super Soldier Mini. I have no problem with that.

This is Steve leading a spy team book, that’s cool!

Also, while Spencer is doing the Fear Itself SA arc, is it 100% that Bru is leaving all together, or is this just a break, so he can crank out a new Criminal arc?
