Paul Cornell Goes Exclusive to DC

We first met Paul Cornell's comics work at Marvel Comics, with his Wisdom mini-series and later, the much beloved Captain Britain and MI-13, as well as some other series, like Dark Reign Young Avengers.  It seems as if Paul was for Marvel, and Marvel was for Paul.  It turns out that's not the case.

It's common knowledge that Paul Cornell is about to start a lengthy run on Action Comics with issue #890 next week, so it comes as a pleasant surprise that he's been signed to DC exclusively for the next 2 years.

It's always nice when someone you respect gets some of that respect back from the publishers, and I'm excited to see what Paul can bring to the DC Universe with his excellent take on character and amazing sci-fi imagination.  If you're not familiar with Paul's work, do yourself a favor, and pick up almost anything he's done in comics (or any of his work really.) and you'll see that something special we've been talking about for the last few years.

We too, are thoroughly chuffed as well. Paul was one of our first long form audio interviews here, before it was even called Talksplode.

  1. This is good news.  I enjoyed his voice in Captain Britain and really think he’s going to do a terrific job on Action.

  2. Nice! Sad to see that he won’t be tackling some more big name characters at Marvel, but it sounds like DC might actually let him stretch his legs a bit more and (possibly?) give him even more big titles to work on. Marvel’s loss is DC’s gain.

  3. Begun, the Exclusive Wars have.  I’m interested to see what else he’ll be doing.  I’d love to see him do something for Vertigo.

  4. This has been going on for a decade.

  5. Well, there goes any chance I’ll be reading more of his stuff anytime soon. 🙁

  6. Great. He’s an awesome writer and I’d love to see what he can do at DC. Better yet, I really hope he gives us at least something from Vertigo as well.

  7. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Wonderful news! Glad he gets a nice high profile project too! He gets to do Action Comics #900!

  8. Please let this mean that James Robinson will be writing far fewer books. Hope the put Cornell on JSA

  9. Liked his work at Marvel, but I’m glad DC gets a writer of this caliber. His tone and style might be just what they need. Good for all involved!

  10. I’m looking forward to his Action Comics Lex Luthor run. I was never big on MI13, but always felt I got off that boat too soon. His Dr. Who episodes in the early seasons were stellar. Good move for DC.

  11. Um…wasn’t this announced like a month ago? Gonna be sad to see Cornell leave Marvel because he was kicking ass there but I will gladly accept his tallents in DC. Good luck sir!

  12. @diabhol You make me sad:(

  13. Congrats! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!

  14. No, this was announced today.

  15. @Josh really? Becuase I know I’ve heard this before. Maybe it was just the rumor of it.

  16. @mikeandzod21 I believe this is what you’re referring to (or at least it’s what I recall reading and why I too thought this had already been announced): http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/06/01/paul-cornell-to-go-dc-exclusive-and-write-new-doctor-who/  Not officially confirmed at the time, so news in the sense that now we know for sure.

  17. Big fan of his from his Doctor Who work, so I can’t wait to see what he brings to DC.

  18. Congrats! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, even though I have no idea how Paul Cornell is like in person.

  19. A huge congrats to a superb writer and an all around great guy.  It’s Marvel’s loss for sure.  They should have signed him when they had the chance.  I’m excited to see what he’ll be doing at DC though.  I’m looking forward to his run on Action.

  20. Great news and interesting to see what else they offer him.  That interview was my first exposure to the ifanboy experience…haven’t looked back…

  21. Thanks @mrlogical. I knew I’d seen it before this, so that makes sense.

  22. Captain Britain MI 13 was incredibly overhyped by iFanboy.  Bleh.

  23. vadamowens: I know, but sadly DC isn’t where my interest lies.

KickAss: True, but it was still well written and well drawn. I just didn’t *care*. And Pete Wisdom is an annoying dick. 🙂
