  4. Escapists #4
    Powers #20
    Uncanny X-Men #479

…and, wow, is that it? If the last PULSE volume comes out this week, I’m getting that.

Oh! That reminds me: I think I need some shopping help. I created a monster. I got my wife to buy some manga at the comics shop this weekend. She never picked up a comic in her life, and she went through her four books and two Scott Pilgrims in about 36 hours. She’s closing in on vol. 3, and she’s already going, “More! What else would I like?” and I’m going, “Oh, s***, I dunno!” and shoveling my Runaways digests at her like coal into a locomotive, vainly brainstorming what else I have in my collection that she would read. So: first time female reader. Any suggestions before I get to the store this week?

  5. What kind of stories is she looking for?

The manga that she liked… what were they about?

Conor, how long you been reading UXM?

  7. 52 WEEK #23
    CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #7

The lightest of weeks, usually a good time to check out something different, but nothing’s really catching my eye on the list. Maybe Tales of the Unexpected. Good thing I’ve accumulated a big stack of trades to read.

  8. DMZ #12 (MR) $2.99

    ULTIMATE X-MEN #75 $3.99
    UNCANNY X-MEN #479 $2.99
    WOLVERINE ORIGINS #7 $2.99

This is the first week I’ve been under 10 books in about 6 weeks or so. The worst part is that there’s nothing I’m really excited to read. Been reading Batman War Games and The Ultimates though and they’re great so it looks like I’ll have a lot of free time to continue those. Only 1 CW title, it feels so strange.

  9. Conor, how long you been reading UXM?

ABSOLUTE SANDMAN VOL 1 HC (MR)
WOLVERINE ENEMY OF THE STATE COMPLETE EDITION HC

Well for me this week begins and ends with Absolute Sandman. Nothing else could come out and I would be perfectly happy. This will be my book of the year without a doubt. I am also very much looking forward to the Millar Wolverine HC.

However, the rules for POW are the best of the monthly titles, so…I expect the usual suspects will be competing for my personal POW: Escapists, Fables, DMZ and Powers with Fables coming out on top. The dark horse is Tales of the Unexpected since I love Spectre stories. Worst of the week will most likely be Ultimate X-Men – I am hating the “God War” storyline so much I decided to drop the book so this should be my last issue coming via mail.

  11. Hey Jimski
I’m not a female reader, but my wife loves Y The Last Man, Preacher, Runaways, and I even got her to read the Punisher MAX trades but only because it was Garth Ennis. I went for TransMet and nearly blew the whole deal so that I wouldn’t recommend.

  12. 52 Week #23
    Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #30
    Green Arrow #67
    Green Lantern Corps #4
    Tales of the Unexpected #1
    Ultimate Power #1
Invincible Vol 7 Threes Company TP

Pretty good week. I’m still Sceptical about Ultimate Power, but i’ll see what the first issues like. And it’s always good to see an Invincible trade on the list.

  13. and 100 bullets
she has a much longer attention span than I
she didn’t care that I dropped it last month as long as I keep buying the trades

  14. Those are some good ideas, and I’ve thought of a few more. (I just remembered the Fables trade in my backpack, which I’m assuming my wife will love without having actually finished it myself.) This weekend, she got the “Kingdom Hearts” manga collection, and the Disney/video game combo made it a no-brainer for her. And Scott Pilgrim seems to be all things to all people.

She’s an odd duck, my wife; she’s very girly-girl in some ways (she makes it about fifteen minutes into “Clerks” before the language so offends her sensibilities that she turns it off) but at the same time she loved “Kill Bill” so much that we registered for it when we got married. “X-Men 2” was our second date, and she’s a Buffy fan, so I think I might try the Astonishing hardcover. I also need to remember who I lent “Bone” to; that seems like it would be the perfect pick, while also being gigantic enough to buy me some time. I’m also going to give her “Fortune and Glory” as a kind of Bendis allergy test. I’m trying to decide if “Alias” would or would not be the worst idea of all time. She’ll either love it or make it to the anal sex on page 10 and send me to sleep on the couch.

POWERS #20 – This isn’t on my list, but I was thinking about it. I have never read Powers (can I still post here?), but I have always been curious. Should I start with the trades or would it be possible to jump on? Actually, I have always thought I would wait until the series ended and buy it in whatever omnibus form it will no doubt be released. However I don’t know if I can wait.

ULTIMATE POWER #1 – I am not buying this, but I am going to keep an eye out for what people have to say about it. You know, listening to podcasts that talk about comics. I imagine fanboys will have their opinions on this.

  17. how could you marry a girl who’s not into anal?
    man life is looong

  18. hah, err good point. I meant Ultimate. That’ll teach me for using initialisations.

  19. Anal sex is totally in my criterion for marriage.

    ANYWAY

My girl is currently reading that Wildstorm series Manifest Eternity. It’s the only comic she reads and she seems to be loving it.

  20. There’s no escape! Come on; I manage to resist making the obvious “I need to give her my Bone” pun only to end up here anyway?

  21. It’s never been confirmed that that was in fact back door lovin’.

I mean, it probably was, but still…

  22. I meant Ultimate.

I’ve been reading Ultimate X-Men since its inception.

POWERS #20 – This isn’t on my list, but I was thinking about it. I have never read Powers (can I still post here?), but I have always been curious. Should I start with the trades or would it be possible to jump on?

    TRADES!

As for Jimski’s wife, try out the standards: Box Office Poison, Strangers in Paradise, Y: The Last Man… ooh, try The Escapists!

My out on a limb suggestion is Ultimate Spider-Man, if she digs that sort of thing.

  23. 52 Week #23
    ABSOLUTE SANDMAN VOL 1 HC

DARKMAN VS ARMY OF DARKNESS #1 (OF 4)
    ULTIMATE POWER #1
    SCANNER DARKLY GN

ABSOLUTE SANDMAN HC makes everything great this month.
I’m not sure about Darkman.. and Ultimate Power, I’ll have to wait and see the reactions on the store and the boards.

Hey Jimski, My wife also is a Fan of Whedon (Buffy and Angel), I would suggest:
    1) Astonishing X-Men (because of Whedon dialogue).
    2) Walking Dead (great characterization).
    3) Bone (Disney-esque).
    4) Strangers In Paradise (Real-life comic).
    5) Batman: Hush (Just because is Batman), or Spiderman: Blue (Nice Romance, and Spiderman 3 is near).

For her sake (and humanity’s, that guy is SO overrated) keep her safe away from Bendis, unless is Ultimate Spider-man. I know everyone think Bendis is the Second Christ my apologies if I offended anyone, just my humble opinion.

    Cheers!

  24. 5) Batman: Hush (Just because is Batman),

No offense to Baggo, but your wife will divorce you if you give her Hush.

    That was awful.

I’ve been rereading Alias, I forgot how fucking great that is. It’s worth the anal sex risk.

  25. I manage to resist making the obvious “I need to give her my Bone” pun only to end up here anyway?

It always turns out that way in the end

    I did it. sorry

  26. I think I’m just going to get Escapists and Ultimate Power this week, saving my money for the barrage that’s sure to come down the road. Sandman is on the Christmas list.

Baggo’s recommendation to keep your wife away from Bendis actually reminded me that Alias would be a great book to give to someone who’s new to comics and not really that into superheroes.

I think because of the way they approach the material Marvels or Astro City could be good choices too. Or maybe some of the Loeb/Sale books? Superman for all seasons could really appeal to someone who hasn’t read many comics. Or maybe DD: Yellow?

  27. Here’s what you do:
Honey, remember that time that you made me watch(INSERT CHOICE HERE The Divine Secrets of The Ya Ya Sisterhood, Beaches, Steel Magnolias, the Traveling Pants movie)? This scarred me mentally. I was shaken emotionally and frankly questioned my manhood. Well, all I want to do is hit you in the swink which could be physically uncomfortable the first time but at least you won’t be scarred(provided that I use lube).

  28. and
I promise not to secretly tape it

  29. Conor beat me to the Alias recommendation – but Jimski, the people have spoken!

  30. I feel as if Graham Chapman should come in here in military dress and shut the whole place down.

  31. most of the walks funded by the ministry of silly walks were inspired at least in part by anal sex so it would be appropriate

  32. Terence Howard(Hustle & Flow) has been announced as Jim Rhodes in the Iron Man movie
    http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=87090

  33. Jim Rhodes is cast for Iron Man and, according to IMDB, so is Jessica Jones for the Luke Cage movie. Which I mention without comment.

I loves me some Alias; thinking about the fact that it and the Pulse are gone for the sake of, like, House of M makes a tiny hiss of steam come out of my ears. In a peculiar twist of fate, my copy of the Alias Omnibus was purchased for me by my wife for our first anniversary, although she essentially has no idea what lies within the book itself.

I was totally going to say “Marvels.” This might also be a good time for that frickin’ Uncle Scrooge book that seems to keep turning up like a bad penny. My wife’s reading has all been digest-sized so far; I’ll have to pull out my “Y the Last Man”s and test her tolerance for single issues.

LIBERTY MEADOWS VOL 3 SUMMER OF LOVE TP (Maybe)

    Hooray for light weeks!

To add to other recommendations people have been giving for yoru wife, I’d say Box Office Poison and Tricked are two books that I think just about anyone will like, but women moreso since they’re really about human relationships (and I’d say that’s one of the most important things that’ll appeal to most women). Blankets and Strangers in Paradise, too. Honestly, I’d say you anything by Alex Robinson, Terry Moore, Craig Thompson would be good; I’m sure they get all the ladies at the cons.

Also, I cannot recommend Local enough if you want to track down the single issues.

Keeping it real for the indie kids,
    Kal

  35. Blankets? That filth?

    http://www.marshallnews.com/story/1171005.html

Unrelated, what do people think about Maus? I have recently reread it with the idea of turning it into a teaching lesson. I’ve read other lessons on the memoir, but what do people here think about this comic?

    ARES GOD OF WAR TP
WOLVERINE ENEMY OF THE STATE COMPLETE EDITION HC

  37. It may just be because I’m a Missourian, but every time I read that story my first thought is, “How is it that the Marshall library has ‘Blankets,’ but mine doesn’t?? I wonder if I could get them to send their copies to the big, bad cityfolk.”

I thought “Maus” was outstanding and well-deserving of its attention. Some people can’t get past the cartoonifying of the Holocaust, so be ready to get a couple phone calls from some parents. Some parents, after all, think “Blankets” is filth.

  38. Maus and Judd Winnick’s Pedro and Me are great examples you can give to almost anyone.

  39. Persepolis!

  40. if she’s a buffy fan, your wife may enjoy Joss Whedon’s Tales of the Slayers, which is a bunch of short stories set in the Buffy universe written by Joss and other writers from the show. and it has nifty tim sale and francis yu art.

    52 WEEK #23
    ESCAPISTS #4 (OF 6)
    INFINITE CRISIS COMPANION
SAM NOIR: SAMURAI DETECTIVE #2 (the only reason I’m buying this is becausemy friend’s giving me money…)
Also, maybe the fifth trade of Fables (if it’s there and if I have money)

  42. Persepolis rules.
I can’t wait to read that new K. Vaughn book.

  43. I used to be a history teacher, and I used Maus in a few lessons. It really went over well, the kids really got it. It’s such a great text because I’ve seen it being used in every level from high school to college to graduate programs. Really incredible book.

  44. My high school used to use Maus up until the year before I was in the class (bad timing on my part), according to the old teachers, everyone (even the jocks) loved it.

  45. ESCAPISTS #4
    52 WEEK #23
    GEN 13 #1
    STAN LEE MEETS DR STRANGE
    ULTIMATE POWER #1
    UNCANNY X-MEN #479
    WOLVERINE ORIGINS #7
    BATTLESTAR GALACTICA #2

Nice light week. Looking forward to BSG and the Escapists. Most curious however about Ultimate Powers as I don’t read anything currently that is set in the Ultimate universe.

  46. My list is tremendously small this week:

    Escapists #4
    52 #23
    Green Arrow #67
    Uncanny X-Men #479
and maybe Tales of the Unexpected #1

Now, Jimski, I’m kind of girly myself, and a huge Buffy fan, so here is my take on gifts for the wife –

    1. Fray (futuristic slayer book by Joss himself)
    2. Y the Last Man
    3. Astonishing X-Men
    4. Animal Man (the Morrison stuff, obviously)
    5. Herobear and the Kid by Mike Kunkel
    6. Flight volume 1 or 2 (2 is better)

Now, on to my problems. I just got $50 to spend at Barnes and Noble and $60 to spend at the LCS (Birthdays rock), and I want to spend it on something special, not just the weekly stack. Suggestions, anyone?

  47. The Escapists is 6 issue mini series?!?!
    No one told me that!
I want it to be an ongoing.
Damn you Dark Horse, I say thee nay

  48. With Marvel’s pushback of Civil War…I really only have few books this week…New X-men, Ultimate Power, and Ultimate X-men #75 and 52. But because of such a short stack this week AND last (Last week it was only 52), I start picking up the “Street Fighter: Sakura Legends” issues…I got #1 last week, and #2 will be in my grasp this week.

It’s a pretty good book…Totally a humour one. And yeah, it’s kinda got that manga-ey influence…BUT HEY! I’m allowed to represent my asian side with comics once in awhile! 😀

Also, I’m thinkin’ of picking up a fatty Tradepaper back or Graphic Novel…any REALLY good suggestions (aside from the commonly mentioned things such as Tricked or Box Office Poison. Maybe something along the lines of Superheros in a real world kinda like Heroes?) I’m thinkin’ of gettin’ “The Pride Of Bahgdad”.

  49. “Also, I’m thinkin’ of picking up a fatty Tradepaper back or Graphic Novel…any REALLY good suggestions (aside from the commonly mentioned things such as Tricked or Box Office Poison. Maybe something along the lines of Superheros in a real world kinda like Heroes?) I’m thinkin’ of gettin’ “The Pride Of Bahgdad”.”

I just got Pride of Baghdad this week and haven’t read it yet, but I paged through the art and it’s amazing.

Also, I wanted to throw out two standard iFanboy recommendations that I took and was happy I did: Sleeper and Gotham Central. It’s not really heroes in the real world, more like real people in the super-hero world, but I stand by them as amazing reads. The second Gotham Central trade is the best of the three; all of the Sleeper trades rock. Also, if you don’t read Y, fix that now.

  50. I think this is a very strong list of suggestions! I forgot about Fray. While it was out. Because there was a year between issues.

“The Escapists is 6 issue mini series?!?!
    No one told me that!
I want it to be an ongoing.”

I occasionally have the exact opposite problem. I buy something thinking it’s going to be a fun, finite story with an ending and then end up saying, “What the hell do you mean, ‘issue 7′?”

Dustin, when I hear “$50 to spend at Barnes & Noble” I immediately think of their exclusive Ultimate Spider-Man mega-hardcover, which a) you can only get there b) collects a huge number of issues, which is my favorite way to read ’em.

  51. Yeah, I’ve already delved into Gotham Central. Not quite Sleeper yet, but I’m thinkin’ of it. I also thought of picking up the infamous Teen Titans story “The Judas Contract”

But thanks for the suggestions, Dustin. I’ll keep my eye out for sleeper.

  52. Annihilation 3
    Civil War Frontline 7
    Ultimate x-men 75
    uncanny x-men 479
    Thunderbolts 107

  54. THIS IS VERY OLD NEWS, but i just came across it, what do you guys think about it.

    http://www.boingboing.net/2006/03/18/marvel_comics_steali.html

  55. Whoa, that’s a thread from MONTHS ago. Should we re-open the box? Or sum it up in one word…

    Stupid.

  56. DC

    52 Week #23 $2.50
Absolute Sandman Vol 1 HC $99.00
    DMZ #12 $2.99
Firestorm The Nuclear Man #30 $2.99
    Worldstorm #1 $2.99

    Marvel

    Uncanny X-Men #479 $2.99

    Dark Horse

    Oldboy Vol 2 TP $12.95

I already have Absolute Sandman. I really do. I was one of the people who ordered it off Amazon when they had the price mislisted and it showed up at my door on Saturday. The new coloring is absolutly amazing. I’m just taking my time though is, really soaking it up with the giant pages and all. Plus the pitch for the series is in the back and its damn intresting too.

Dustin – Just wait till the Dead Robin storyline gets traded. It was my favorite one out of the run.

  57. underwear perverts
    ha

  58. Yes, “underwear perverts,” the term coined by Warren Ellis. Author of Thunderbolts.

    Still funny!

  59. Yes, “underwear perverts,” the term coined by Warren Ellis. Author of Thunderbolts.

    Right on!

I really think that if you’re getting comics or graphic novels for them who do not read comics, it’s really important to stay away from any superhero stuff, because it’s important to show people that comics don’t have to be about superheroes. And after you’ve shown them some things, that have nothing to do with capes, and convinced them of the scope of the medium, THEN kick in with some good hero stuff. But that’s just my take on it.

    Also, here’s what I’m buying:

  60. ESCAPISTS #4
    ANNIHILATION #3
    CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #7
    NEW X-MEN #3
    UNCANNY X-MEN #479

Lite week. Been reading a lot of Hellboy and Walking Dead trades, I may pick up another one of those as well…

  61. Did somebody mention wanting to start reading Powers? I want to say Dave Graham? Anyway, Newsarama reprints a page of Powers per day:

    comics.newsarama.com/powers/

I can’t attest to how fulfilling a reading experience that might be.

  62. Jimski, thanks, I didn’t know that newsarama did that. One page per day? I’ll check it out, but I don’t know about that. I think I will just put it on my trades list and drop some hints around Christmas time.

I just remembered, a couple of months ago, someone was talking about trading trades through here. How would we set something like that up? If people are interested.

  63. 5) Batman: Hush (Just because is Batman),

No offense to Baggo, but your wife will divorce you if you give her Hush.

    That was awful.

Yeah I’m gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. I do not understand why this story gets shit on so much. This was the first story I read when I started getting into comics and I LOVED it! I recently passed it on to friend (a girl) who has never read a comic in her life and she devoured it and begs for more. I know its not the best work out there, but it is damn fun to read!!

  64. Awful.

    🙂

  65. Give her Batman Year One and see what she likes better. THAT is some good Batman.

  66. I think I am going to substitute Green Lantern Corp (which I bought last month on a whim and only mildly enjoyed) for STAN LEE MEETS DR STRANGE. The previews for this looked very nice. I got the Spider-man story and it was better than Just Imagine…, but I guess that isn’t saying much.
