Listen to this: Seth and Daniel Clowes Radio Interview

Promoting a tour Seth and Daniel Clowes are doing, they appeared on the Leonard Lopate show, a local NPR show in New York City. These guys are at the top of their field when it comes to the kinds of comics they produce. I know they don’t get too much play around here (busy with The New Yorker, feature films, and things like that, I imagine), but it’s still a very interesting talk. While the interviewer wasn’t necessarily ignorant about comics, it was fun to hear the master cartoonists disavow him of some of his preconceived notions. At one point, he asked if what they do is basically the same as a storyboard artist, and they explained the difference, and also came up with a very good definition of what a cartoonist should be doing. It applies to comics of all stripes, I think in many ways.

They’re also promoting their new books. Seth has The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists, and Clowes has The Death-Ray out in stores.

  1. There were in Montreal last night. Apparently the whole tour has just been the two talking to each other for 40 minutes or so and then going to questions. Really entertaining talk, both guys were much funnier than I had expected (especially Seth). I picked up Death-Ray but forgot to bring enough cash for both and now I’m kicking myself.

  2. this post makes my day. Can’t wait to listen to it today at work. =)

  3. Awesome listen – Thanks for posting this!

  4. This is great, Josh, thanks for this. That’s some meaty comics conversation for a 17-minute interview.

  5. I wouldn’t say the guy had preconceived notions. It sounded more like a devil’s advocate question. A way of getting the interviewee to talk about this particular subject. I say this because otherwise the interviewer seemed to have done his research and demonstrated some respect for the art form.
