VIDEO: Size Up Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man’ Test Footage

Edgar Wright is making an Ant-Man movie for Marvel. He shot edited some test footage which was screened at San Diego Comic Con last summer. Since that fateful day, the clip has been described by a number of lucky con-goers to friends and loved ones with wild gesticulations and “Pew! Pew!” noises. Kind of like the Star Wars Christmas Special and that Jim Henson Christmas special that had both the Muppet Show Muppets and the Sesame Street Muppets together and exists solely on VHS and YouTube.

Anyway. Half a year later, the footage has surfaced online. Remember, this is test footage, not a clip from the final movie.

Let’s take a look.

I think they just might be on to something. The Marvel Studios flicks are often at their best when they’re not taking themselves too seriously, the fun factor proving their edge over DC’s big screen offerings. There’s a lot of physical comedy here, with plenty of potential for more. Now might be prime time to exploit Ant-Man’s simple yet deeply robust power set with modern movie magic. Building on the success of the Marvel brand, it also has more potential for success than Wright’s previous comic book adaptation, the instant cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

  1. I love this footage! I think Wright might be the perfect director for this – no one’s gonna see an Ant Man movie unless it’s got something a little special and different about it, and Wright’s one of those directors with a unique style that will (hopefully) make a film like this stand out.

Marvel Studios have (mostly) made great unusual creative choices for people in/making their films, and I think this will continue the trend.

  2. I think the footage looks pretty cool. Definitely a good use of the powers on film. I was excited by this just with Wright’s involvement, so this just adds to my excitement.

  3. I really liked the look of the shots where Ant-Man stayed the same size, but the surrounding scene expanded to show the size change.

I still think Neil Patrick Harris would make a great Hank Pym and probably fit in well with Edgar Wright’s tone and aesthetic. He’s nerdy and funny, but not unbelievable as an athletic-actiony kind of guy.

God. This looks so inventive and fun. I can’t wait.

  5. This looks great! An Ant-Man movie especially, should be fun and not ‘dark and serious’.

    Looking forward to it now.

  6. VERY COOL! Dig it.

  7. Looks damn good. What’s that music from? Sounds familiar.

  8. Looks badass

  9. Video say “Sorry, this video does not exist.” I assume it’s been pulled. Any working links?

  10. I scoffed – SCOFFED! – when I heard mention of this as a movie. But now I’m convinced. This could be a blast.

  11. Quality of the footage is bad, but from what I can tell it looks good. I’m sure Wright is gonna make a great movie since he’s one of the better directors out there today. I’m still not sure if Ant-Man can sustain an entire film though…Would have been cool to see him in Avengers as a test to see if an audience is willing to watch him.

  12. According to Wikipedia (and the entry could be old and inaccurate) this is suppose to be a Hank Pym and Scott Lang movie, but the armor here looks far more reminiscent of Eric O’Grady. Does anyone know or has Marvel even released who the (primary) identity of Ant-Man will be?

In trying to find out, I was reminded there was an Ant-Man Max series slated to be released in the early 00s and I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Clayton Crain or Daniel Way but that’s something I’d like to see get out there, if only to kill my curiosity…
