Great Moments in Comics History: The X-Men #14

The X-Men #14

I’m beginning to understand why Marvel Comics were so popular with college students in the 1960s.

Comments

  1. w.t.f. You can’t make this stuff up.

  2. Far out man

  3. "You’re melting my bongos!" will be my new catch phrase

  4. As a follow-up to the recent "Marvel Noir" books, I think they should launch a "Marvel Beatnik" line.

I’d like to see Juggernaught in a black turtleneck and beanie reading poetry.

  5. So "Bernard" is in reality Huey Lewis, "It’s hip to be square".

  6. As Joe Kelly once said in Deadpool:

"Oh the kids in this day with their cocaine"

  7. wow…words fail me.

  8. So…Ken Cosgrove and Harry Crane were X-men?

  9. You heard it from The Man himself: The fasted way to a woman’s libido is through her ear… but you must be tender.

  10. @zenman once he starts rhyming.. no one can stop the juggernaut.

  11. One question: how did "libido" make it through the Code?

And Bernard kinda looks like Josh (or is it the other way around? Hmmm?).

  12. @siraim:  No one except for Kitty Pryde (aka Shadow "Hep" Cat).

  13. @finbarbat That… is scarily accurate.  I’m never going to be able to look at Silver Age Bobby and Hank the same way again.

  14. @Zenman would Banshee and Syrin be folk singers battling injustice through song.

  15. sorry forgot the ? at the end there.

  16. Listen to the Uncanny X-cast, they go over this stuff in pretty large sums of detail. You’d be surprised.

  17. I love how the waitress sasses them for being cheap.  ‘You going to order two cups?  That bald dude not pay you for wearing tights all day?’

  18. So Iceman beats women with clubs? Are they wooden clubs or made of snow?

  19. OK, this is just fucking weird

  20. Beast is so stoned in this panel.

He must have been like Timothy O’Leary hoping to expand his already large intellect.

  21. i’m imagining the next panel with bobby and hank sharing a whip cream frappuccino with two straws

  22. OMGZ WTF people talked weird back in those days  LOL ROFL!

  23. This is probably my favorite panel from an old X-Men comic.  And the Mad Men comparison is right on — it’s absolutely that era.

  24. It’s so funny to think now people have no idea the fuck is going on. But back when this first came out, this made absolute perfect sense to the readers.

Someone will be reading Phonogram or something 20-30 years from now and have no idea what they’re talking about.

  25. Or now.

  26. Stan Lee needs to write an episode of MAD MEN

  27. Things were soo much cooler back then. Now in coffee shops all you find are douches with laptops(thank you John Stewart).

and kudos to finbarbat for placing this with that scene from MadMen, season 1 was it?

  28. I think Jeff Parker directly references some this stuff in one of his First Class books. I thought he was just making this stuff up, but Stan Lee did it first.

  29. It’s like that scene in ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World’ where the hipster son is dancing with his girl.

Other then that scene, that film is not dated at all.
