Geoff Johns Announces New Aquaman Series

Leave it to Geoff Johns to have us scrambling on a Saturday night.  Down in Orlando at Megacon, Geoff Johns announced and the shared with everyone not at Megacon via Twitter, that after Brightest Day wraps up he'll be launching a new Aquaman series later this year.  Unknown if this will be an ongoing or a mini series, we have to assume this will be a ongoing series, most likely spinning off of the Flashpoint event set to begin in May, of which, we recently saw some art by Andy Kubert featuring a new, very angry Aquaman.

This should alleviate any fans of Aquaman (and Brian Bendis) who were concerned with Aquaman's apparent demise in the pages of Brightest Day.  We'll post more information as we hear it.  But for now, Tom Katers and other DC fans can rejoice that a new Aquaman series, shepherded by Geoff Johns is on the way!

Comments

  1. Finally. Yes!

  2. Interesting

  3. Please have Ivan Reis draw it!!!!

  4. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

  5. Good news, kinda bummed though, I was hoping he would write Firestorm. My big question though, is what this means for GL or Flash?

  6. Awesome. I am ready for Johns and Aquaman.

  7. @monkeypaw787  He can handle all three. He’s writing 3 books right now with Brightest Day, Flash and GL.

  8. Yay!

Can’t wait to see who the artist is.

  9. @SteenAR  Yes, but one of the books is a limited series, and the other series’ have been met with constant delays.

  10. Good news.  Ivan Reis on art would be great, but I think he’s drawing Secret Origins – Sinestro after Brightest Day.  However things could change.
So Johns has written Superman. Currently writing the Flash and Green Lantern.  Is in the midst of writing Batman (all be it Earth 1).  And now about to write Aquaman.  So other than Wonder Woman and the Maritan Manhunter, he has nearly written all of the Big 7, which begs the obvious that Geoff needs to get his hands on the Justice League.  It kills me that it has been floundering for all these years now.

  11. BRING BACK TOPO!!

  12. MMnn… yet another con for braking news? My God, I guess Ifanboy is gonna have to cover this one next year.

  13. Definitely going to give this series a shot.

  14. Woooooooo!!!

  15. If it’s drawn by Ivan Reis, I’m soooo totally getting it.

  16. do we think this will last though?

  17. @rayclark  I’m with you. TOPO! TOPO! TOPO!

  18. @kidCharlemagne  It will last as long as Johns is writing it. Let’s just hope it’s more than one 6-8 issue arc.

  19. When did Aquaman turn into Duke Nukem?

  20. That is a cover from Flashpoint of a altered aquaman

  21. Is there any news on what’s going to happen to the Flash ongoing. I am loving that series and I’m not a big Aquaman fan, so I know where I’d rather Johns went after Brightest Day.

  22. I read the Aquaman series from a few years back; the “magic water hand” series. it was OK, but I didn’t keep with it. Aquaman seems to be a character DC can’t pick a direction for and stick with it. I’ll probably pass on this one.

  23. Thank you Geoff Johns!!! So if Brightest Day considered Aquaman’s Rebirth? Cause before he took over GL he had GL Rebirth mini & before he came back to Flash w/Barry he had a Flash Rebirth mini, so should the Brightest Day event be regarded as the Aquaman Rebirth & does that mean we should read it in order to get what Johns has planned for the upcoming Aquaman series?

  24. i hope he highlights the cool parts of aquaman, you know, like…

  25. hooray! Hope it’s not too tied up with Brightest Day because i haven’t been reading that.

  26. I’m in if it’s an adaptation of the Entourage version of the character.

  27. Happy there will be some kind of new series, and given John’s previous work with Green Lantern and the Flash, there’s the opportunity for Aquaman to have a significant role within the DCU.

What would people like to see out of a New Aquaman series? I see some Topos, anything else?

  28. This is aweseome news- but here;s hoping it doesn’t look anything like the image above.
    Is that Vampire Aquaman?

  29. YES!!!!!  Hey wait, you mean I’m not the only Aquaman fan out there?  lol  They make fun of me at my local shop for it, but now I can laugh at them bwahahaha

  30. Whoa

  31. Deadman backups too? Go for the complete old school…

depending on the artist i might be in. =)

  32. YES! lets have geoff johns do more than 3 books like old times!

  33. This is will cool! Kinda figured Aquaman would get a series after Brightest Day, now the artist attached will be interesting to see…

  34. Does this mean that Peter Tomasi will announce he will doing a Martian Manhunter book also?

  35. Ifanboy needs a trip to megacon!!!!!!!  Orlando is a great town.

  36. I was at MegaCon this weekend. Was gald to get some exclusive info at the DC pannel!

  37. YES! Haven’t we been begging for this book since, I dunno, around Infinite Crisis?

  38. Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!! I hope Johns stays on the book for a good long time. I want an epic run. I can’t wait to see how Johns weaves all the great stuff from the silver age(Aquaboy, Topo) , Peter David’s amazing run(Atlantis Chronicles, Time & Tide mini and 46 issues) and the more recentish things Rick Veitch, Will Pfeifer, John Arcudi did into his story.   Now all we need is for Aqualad to get a haircut that’s not from 1993.

  39. @JohnVFerrigno  I agree….but will give it an issue or two out…I too partook with the magic hand-so so

  40. I am actually looking forward to an Aquaman series. Thanks Geoff!

  41. I think I’ll pass. I’ll admit that I used to think Aquaman was lame and always made fun of how he talked to fish, but after brightest day I’m convinced that Aquaman is indeed pretty awesome, but still not convinced enough to read him every month.

  42. Brian Michael Bendis is an Aquaman fan? Weird

  43. Awesome-sauce!

  44. @mikegraham6: quite the opposite

  45. Tom is the cause of this.
Tom vs. The flash dc does a new flash series. Tom vs. Aquaman and now a new Aquaman series.

  46. @SteenAR  not very well though. The Flash has been suspect

  47. Not a big fan of the character because I don’t know much about him, but Johns always makes things interesting.  I will prolly check it out, but not necessarily in issues.

  48. And in a year, we’ll have DC’s new Aquaman-centric event book: “WATERWORLD”

  49. Well; good luck Geoff with Aquaman!! This character has alot of potential and I think only one time I was ever really intrested and that was back in the 80’s when he was the leader of the JLA in Detroit. Other then that it has never really been a good series and it usually has to much time spent on magic when he should be more warrior/king then anything. Interaction with other heroes is his strong suit since he can not stand alone and to many stories in the water well………    I look forward to it hoping Aquaman becomes a better character.

    K

  50. @conor  didn’t you guys perdict this on the show over a year ago!!!

  51. Hmmm…Flash then Aquaman? If I didn’t know any better I would think Geoff Johns is following a path similar to Tom Katers.

  52. I just got back from Orlando, the con was a lot better than I thought it’d be. So exciting to get some cool news!

  53. Im hoping the Aquaman series is more the Brightest Day version…I think it almost has to be.    I know there’s been talk of Flash being cancelled in a couple issues…while I know it will get rebooted, maybe Johns will be leaving Flash after Flashpoint and doing Aquaman, while a new writer takes over the new Flash book?

  54. Can’t wait for issue #1, first comic I’ve been this excited for in a LOOOONG time
