Director DJ Caruso Name-Drops Who He’d Like for PREACHER

It looks like someone is excited about a Preacher movie.

And that man is director D.J. Caruso. He’s the one that’s all-but-confirmed as the director of the long-rumored Preacher motion picture, and during his recent press tour surrounding his current flick I Am Number Four he went on a tear as he talked in-depth, for the first time, about how he sees the Vertigo comic on the big screen.

“It is a crazy road trip,” says Caruso in an interview with CloneWeb.com,” and I think what’s amazing and what makes Sony so brave is they can see there’s a real universality to the story when you have good vs. evil. I think when you have these crazy characters, that are not necessarily politically correct, there’s something generally attractive to those characters and those elements. But at the end of the day it really is a story about good vs. evil and the decisions that you make. Whether the demons are going to win or whether the Genesis or the good inside of Jesse is going to be there. So I think there’s a great universality that makes the movie commercial but at the same time it’s one of those that will shock you.”

Caruso, who was seated next to I Am Number Four star Alex Pettyfer, went on to name off some movie actor friends of his who had expressed interest with him personally about being in the film. His Eagle Eye star Shia LaBeouf apparently wants to play the sfx-driven Arseface, while the recent Star Trek reboot lead Chris Pine is eying a role as the ex-preacher Jesse Custer. Pettyfer chimed in to say that he’s trying to stake out the role of the Saint of Killers.

Nothing has been set in stone, Caruso says, as neither casting or a final script has been done. Last weekend Caruso went on Twitter to say that he was working with screenwriter John August for the next six weeks to nail down the shooting script.

  1. I’ll buy Pine as Jesse.  The Beef with a makeshift rectum where his mouth should be has a certain charm.

But the guy shouldn’t even joke about Alex Pettyfer.  That sh*t just ain’t funny 😐

  2. I like LeBeouf as Arseface.  I’m not sure about Pine.  I’ve only seen him in Star Trek.  He seems to have the machismo, but I’m not sure he has the depth Mr. Custer requires.

Cassidy is the key.  He must be perfectly cast.

  3. I really do not want this guy directing this movie. Wish there were something I could do about it. :'(

  4. I’ve always thought Colin Farrell would be an awesome Cassidy, and not just because he’s Irish.

  5. Robert Carlyle or Michael Fassbender for Cassidey.  You know it makes sense.

  6. @DarkKnightDetective  Can’t agree with that more, espicially after “In Bruge”

  7. I’m not trying to troll here, but I really don’t want this to happen.

  8. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@vadamowens  The casting or the adaptation itself?

  9. Also don’t want to be troll guy but I have to agree I don’t want to see this adaptation happen. It’s way too much story for 1 movie. Hell it’s too much for several movies.

  10. @DarkKnightDetective  Agreed. He sold me after In Bruge.

I really dont’ want this guy directing this either but here’s hoping it’s good.

  11. @DarkKnightDetective  Colin Farrell is the first name that popped into my head for Cassidy too. I think he’d kill. If he weren’t too old, I would also suggest Alan Rickman.

  12. Pine has the swagger to play Custer, but I don’t know if he has the right look. My vote is Ron Richards for Arseface.

  13. Ron Perlman could nail the Saint of Killers.. someone give me Caruso’s email so i can send the idea his way.

  14. all of this guys movies are awful- really awful

  15. I really hope they’re joking about Pettyfer as Saint of Killers. I’m pretty unfazed by changes like that normally, but the SofK is based on Rooster Cogburn isn’t he? How ’bout Jeff Bridges?

  16. Isn’t Shia Labeuf like in his 30s? at this point? He seems kind of old to play Arseface. Although he tends to play younger type roles, so maybe it would work. I can see Pine as Custer. I’m really worried about the casting of Tulip. I love the idea of Collin Ferrell as Cassady.

  17. @PaulMontgomery  The movie itself.  Pike is a great idea.  I guess I just want this work to remain sacred? I know its happening regardless of my feelings.

  18. @JohnVFerrigno Shia is 25 years old.

  19. Timothy Olyphant for Custer. Willem Dafoe as Herr Starr. And I still like the old rumor of Ewan McGregor as Cass. Colin Farrell’s too pretty IMO. Aside from good comedic physicality and timing, you don’t exactly have to be classically trained to play Arseface. Any short actor could do it. But R. Lee Ermy’s gotta play his dad.

Honestly, I think the biggest casting challenge here would be Tulip. Besides a distinct visual style and a script adaptation that’s nothing short of amazing, you really have to nail the trio to make this work.

@ed209AF: Excellent choice for Saint of Killers. Perlman would knock it out of the park.

  20. Andrew Garfield for Cassidy!

  21. That picture of Pine especially makes me confindent that he would at least look the part of Jesse Custer.

  22. I can’t see how they could do this justice with just one movie.  It’s just such an epic story.  Either way I hope it works out because it is one of my alltime favorite stories and I’d love to see it done well in another medium.  I always thought that if it was a perfect world and they had to adapt Preacher, HBO or Showtime would be the best place to do it.  Film it as a series and do the whole epic.

I know it’s probably a little too obvious, but I’d love it if they could convince Eastwood to play the Saint of Killers.

  23. Oh, and Daniel Day Lewis as Cassidy.

  24. Never have I wanted a movie to die as much as I do this one

  25. Daniel Day Lewis as “The Saint of Killers”.

Really this should be a 13 episode or more miniseries on tv or at least a 3 part movie.

  26. There’s no way they could cover much of the story in one movie. Maybe the first trade, but I can’t see it having much more. Plus, I think they are gonna have to tone it down – it’s just too offensive to be a successful movie. Can you imagine the protests that could take place? It would be much better as a cable TV series.

That said, if they are hell-bent on making it a movie, I want it to be the best it can be. That means do not cast Megan Fox anywhere near it, and please don’t fook it up like Jonah Hex.

  27. While I was reading this article the words:

    “No, No, No, Definitely No.”

    Kept popping in my head.

I know were not even at a script stage yet for this film but it already looks like Caruso doesn’t understand what the story is about. Yes there is a good vs evil plot in there, but you could say that about any plot in almost every comic. The main theme, and josh could point this out repeatately, is that it’s a story about love and friendship.

Not once did love or friendship come up in Caruso’s explaination for loving the comic and in the interview. Plus the casting ideas he has in mind? So far I am not looking forward to this film and Caruso still isn’t officially signed on yet.

  28. what really has me worried is the mention of arseface being in the movie.  If you have to edit down this huge story into 1 two hour movie arseface is one of the first things I would cut.  what great elements are we going to miss out on because they feel the need to include this minor character?

I’ve said it before it really should be a television series on HBO.  1 issue = 1 episode.  it would be glorious.

  29. There is absolutely, positively no way this can be condensed into one film. I recently read just half of the run alone and it’s staggering how much story Ennis put into the series. It’ll be impossible to see a lot of the original story in this adaptation I’m wondering.

  30. @vadamowens  I agree, Preacher is in my top 5 best comic series ever, I dont even know if the God Chris Nolan could make this work. There is just too much story here and I’d rather not see it done if it’s not done properly. To start it would have to at least be a trilogy, secondly you would need a kick ass director, actors and I’d probably want Ennis doing the screenplay. In the words of Doc Brown, “It can’t be done, it can’t!!! This would work better as a TV series. That all being said, i’ll still watch it if it does get made.

  31. @TheNextChampion  I just read through v. 1-6 again last week and I totally agree.  I’m more scared than anything, that important plot points and context will be left out leaving this movie a big mess.  A husk, more or less.

  32. I personally think Robert Knepper would make a great Cassidy, I also agree that this should be a TV series rather than a movie.

  33. I really like the idea of Chris Pine for Jesse – although I think Timothy Olyphant would be pretty perfect as well. I’m sure Pettyfer was “named” as Saint of Killers because he was probably sitting next to Caruso at the time.

Also, Christoph Waltz as Herr Starr and Sam Elliot as the Texas Ranger.

  34. Katue Sackoff for Tulip? Anybody?

And I want Jensen Ackles as Jesse, if he can do the texas accent.
