Fantagraphics to Publish The Complete Carl Barks

As reported yesterday on Robot6, Fantagraphics will be reprinting the complete works of Carl Barks' Donald Duck stories. The first volume, Lost in the Andes, will start in roughly 1948, and the second volume will cover from about 1952 to 1954.  Later volumes will fill in the gaps for the otherwise chronological collection.

The news became instantly intriguing to me for a couple of reasons.  For one thing, the Complete Peanuts, also published by Fantagraphics, is a monumentally impressive undertaking, and if they can do justice to Charles Schulz as they did, this could be a great thing.  The other reason it's so exciting is that Carl Barks is just one of those names that really matters.  He's considered a master, right up there with Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, and Jack Kirby.  His duck books are among the most respected comic book cartooning out there, and this collection looks to be a wonderful way to celebrate and share the rich legacy.

The volumes will cost around $25 each, with 2 scheduled to be released per year. The first volume will arrive in October or November.

  1. Master indeed. One of the guys that defined the look of modern cartooning. Can’t wait!

    Really looking forward to this.

  3. Can’t wait! I’ll be pre-ordering each and everyone of these.

  4. WANT.

  5. Any insight into his being a “modern master”?  It’s hard for me to tell from, for instance, the panels above what was his innovative contribution.  (I’m in now way trying to be jerk here.  I’m honestly uninformed and curious.)

  6. @BigE  As I understood it, it was the clarity of his lines and cartooning. So clean and smooth, and funny at the same time.

  7. Got it. I guess I can see that.
